Captain Bonebeard
Captain Unknown (a.k.a. Bonebeard)
A mythical, supposedly immortal pirate captain who leads The Bonebeard Pirates. Some believe his claim that he is the same Bonebeard that killed the Umbral Lord around one hundred years ago, while others believe that he is merely taking that name for himself.
Physical Description
Body Features
When last seen, Bonebeard was a tall and well-built man with dark hair. In general, his skin was quite pale, but spending all his time in the sun led him to have a redder skin tone in his heyday. However, as time went on, and he spent more and more time in his fortress, his skin took on its more natural pale tone, giving him an almost ghastly appearance.
Identifying Characteristics
The most notable feature of Bonebeard is the facial injury that gave him his name. Across his chin, his flesh was torn away in a battle with the Umbral Lord, down to the bone. The wound was since cauterized, so his chin has a large exposed bit of bone, making his face recognizable at a glance.
Apparel & Accessories
Bonebeard dresses as an almost stereotypical pirate. He wears a too large, gray coat with several flintlocks strapped on the inside it for easy reach. Under the coat, he wears a ratty, beige shirt that he switches out when it starts to fall apart. On his leg, he wears trousers with a belt and tough rubber boots that go up to his mid-calf. To finish his this ensemble, he dons a large tricorn on his head that he wears backwards with his jolly roger emblazoned on the front.

Personal history
According to the Bonebeard Pirates, Bonebeard grew up in a small fishing village in the Fomaen Islands that no one knows the name of anymore. The Umbral Lord was the ruler of the waters that he grew up in, just like most of the waters at the time, and one day the Lord went on a campaign to stamp down dissent and killed Bonebeard's family, along with disfiguring him in a way that led to his now famous moniker. Bonebeard then rose up and gathered many to his cause and fought back against the Umbral Lord, ultimately killing him. From there, Bonebeard took over most of the old pirate lord's infrastructure, including his base on Skull Town, although purging many of the old crew of those ships.
From there, Bonebeard became one of the most feared pirates on the sea, taking on other pirates, trying to build his eternal legacy. Eventually, though, he went out on raids himself less and less, making fewer appearances as he got older, until he never left his fortress in Skull Town at all. This is where things get fuzzy, as some believe that Bonebeard died and passed the moniker on to someone else, while others believe that he found a way to live eternally, but it twisted his body in some way. Either way, from this point onward, Bonebeard would give orders only from his room in the fortress and not see anyone but his most trusted Mates.
In recent years, with the power of the Bonebeard Pirates dwindling, many assumed his time was over, until The Aurous Fleet arrived. His pirates started attacking Fleet ships, reminding may why they were feared, and rebuilding his wealth. When the other pirate lords of the Islands banded together to fight the Fleet, Bonebeard sent a representative to reject this alliance and instead made the declaration that his crew alone represented freedom in the Islands and that he was going to war with both the Fleet and the other pirates.
Employment
According to some of the stories about him, Bonebeard worked as a fisherman when he was young, before the Umbral Lord killed his family. This is where he learned how to pilot a ship, seemingly better than any man on the ocean. After this, the only job he ever held was as a pirate captain, eventually becoming one of the pirate lords of the islands.
Accomplishments & Achievements
The accomplishment that Bonebeard is most known for is killing the Umbral Lord. At the time, he was the most powerful pirate lord and controlled half of the islands, at least. However, with a small crew of mostly rookies, Bonebeard was able to assault the Umbral Lord's fortifications on his capital, then known as the Shadow Land, but later renamed as Skull Town. He got into the fortress there and fought the Umbral Lord one-on-one and came out victorious. From there, he became one of the most feared pirates of the seas.
Failures & Embarrassments
While not a single concrete failure, in the decades since Bonebeard retired from public life and lived exclusively in his fortress, the Bonebeard Pirates declined in prominence, with many who stopped considering Bonebeard a pirate lord as his power declined. This all stopped, though, when they started raiding Aurous Fleet ships and bases.
Intellectual Characteristics
Bonebeard is crafty, often able to defeat opponents of any strength through clever use of deceit, trickery, and sometimes straight up cheating. However, after some time dominating the seas, he started to believe his own hype and he thought he could outsmart literally anyone, leading him to overlook simple tricks or lies from other people, although few of his enemies took advantage of this weakness.
Morality & Philosophy
Bonebeard's greatest goal is to be remembered. It does not matter to him if he is remembered fondly or infamously, just that his legacy extends long past his lifetime. He also strongly believes in the idea that people only deserve life if they are strong in some fashion, and that anyone who is killed by him or his men deserve it. This philosophy has seeped throughout his crew, leading them to be some of the most vicious pirates out there, as they justify there savagery by claiming that if the people did not deserve it, then they would stop the pirates.
Personality Characteristics
Motivation
Bonebeard's main goal is to become a legend and be talked about long past his death. More recently, he has been warring with the Aurous Fleet to keep it free from the empires of the mainland. Alongside this, he's been sending his men to search for the mystical pieces of a map that would lead him to the treasure of the greatest pirate in history: Captain Bliss.
Savvies & Ineptitudes
Bonebeard is very good at coming up with plans and tricks to defeat people that he thinks are stronger than him. However, this also leads into his greatest weakness. He doesn't think anyone is more cunning than him, and if he considers someone weaker, he will overlook any tricks they might have.
Likes & Dislikes
Bonebeard likes rare treasures, one of a kind things that will add to his legacy. He has little concern with base gold or jewels. He also loves a good fight against someone he thinks is famous enough that there death will be talked about for decades.
On the flip side, Bonebeard cannot stand cowards and people who try to back out of a commitment. He also gets enraged if any of his crew is targeted or killed, generally taking vengeance out on entire ships for a single death.
Virtues & Personality perks
Bonebeard cares a lot about his crew, and is willing to allow anyone willing to play ball into it. He has been known to go on huge campaigns of vengeance, destroying anyone who hurts his crew. He also cracks down on any violence between crew members, trying to foster a sense of comradery and cooperation.
Vices & Personality flaws
He lacks empathy for anyone outside of his crew, and will often overlook the crueler things that his crew does during raids, including murder of surrendering civilians, taking prisoners to sell into slavery, and worse. He also takes revenge disproportionately, often doing at least tenfold to someone who has wronged him.
Hygiene
Bonebeard, even in his younger days, has never been one for hygiene, often letting his hair get greasy and his clothes get stained with both food and blood. He claims that this makes him more of a "real" pirate, but many in his crew, especially among the Mates, find this distasteful and keep better hygiene among themselves.
Representation & Legacy
A Bonebeard ship is instantly recognizable by his jolly roger, which is a normal skull and crossbones, but with the bottom jaw of the skull removed. Bonebeard supposedly designed this himself, with him putting on the tricorn he always wears.
Social
Social Aptitude
Bonebeard is an incredibly skilled speaker, able to sway many people to his cause. Despite the cruel methods he and his crew use, any in the Islands believe that he is the of the factions at war in the Islands, and many sign up to join his crew. A big part of this is the kindness he shows his crew. This skill in conversation is also useful to threaten his enemies and strike fear in those that consider acting against him, an equally important part in how he controls the seas.
Speech
Bonebeard sprinkles his speech with many stereotypical pirate sayings. He will say "argh" in pain, and call people he talks to his "mateys", just like pirates from stories and legends. This likely is not a natural form of speech for him and instead his way of getting closer to the pirate legends of old, even pitching his speech down to seem more "legendary" in his words.
