Diplomats
Aside from entertainment provided by the Arena, Otho also provides smuggling services both in and out of the city. For a considerable fee Otho can get an individual into the city from the wilderness, establishing an identity for them to start a lift in Bastion. The fee can be in currency, information or rare artefacts but the exact value seems to vary depending on Otho’s whim.
Standard produce and equipment can be the difference between life and death for the small remaining tribes in the wilderness, so they’re willing to pay a premium for what his people can provide. Most of this trade occurs with the Gnome and Halfling encampment directly outside the walls, but groups of Orcs, Goblins and other survivors can find themselves with Steel meant for the Skirmishers or food produced by N’uma’ner. All this trading takes place using a group of individuals Otho refers to as his Diplomats. These diplomats are willing to go into the Wasteland to trade, escort and occasionally ‘negotiate’ with its inhabitants. As such all diplomats need to be capable combatants, well armed and aware of their surroundings at all times.
The Diplomats are small in number, with only about 30 in total working for Otho at any time. Trips into the wasteland are for extended periods, normally lasting up to a month or more. A Diplomat may have months of downtime between expeditions. Diplomats normally travel in pairs, with one experienced and one apprentice agent.
The goal of these expeditions is either to explore and plunder some of the ruins surrounding Bastion or to find and make contact with survivors out in the wasteland who may have something to offer. While diplomats are all capable combatants, they will avoid conflict wherever possible. Their name isn’t ironic, they are intended to be representatives of Otho and make business partners or allies more than enemies. The Diplomats are led by one of Otho’s longest serving agents, a Half-Orc named Mesh who has proved how capable she is many times over. Mesh wields a Greataxe when she needs to and her sheer size and prominent tusks can often be imposing for those that don’t know her. In reality Mesh is an exceptionally capable negotiator and takes personal pride in training some of the most promising Diplomats personally. When provoked Mesh is a fearsome combatant, wielding her axe with a brutality twinned with control that few can match.
Diplomats are familiar with many common fiends, and simple monsters found in the wasteland, as well as Goblinoids, Gnolls, Orcs and the occasional Giant.
Notable Diplomats include Hekess, a male gnome who specialises in stealth and killing his targets with twin daggers. He shaves his normally bright purple hair to help avoid detection in the wastelands. He is otherwise quite friendly and enjoys reading fiction in his spare time. Hafan is a dwarf male who has a habit of embellishing his heroic deeds when back in Haven in the hope of making some of the more impressionable women there swoon. The famous scar on his chest was actually caused by him drunkenly stumbling through a window during his misspent youth. Kaspiran is a human male who has a deep founded hatred of Fiends. He will go out of his way to kill any he comes across, even if it is ill advised. He wields a light crossbow of his own design and likes to think of himself as an engineer. Berwyn is a human female with a vivid shock of red hair. She specialises in acquiring antiquities and artifacts from some of the few remaining ancient sites left. She continually talk about how she will eventually find a way across the Broken Span and the riches that are waiting for her on the other side.
