Haven

Upon entering Otho’s Haven visitors are greeted by the two most formidable bouncers in the city, a pair of Clay Golems nicknamed by the staff as Smash and Bash. It’s very rare that there’s trouble inside the Haven, but if there is these silent guardians swiftly, and often lethally intervene. Otho refuses to disclose where he found such protectors, but they have been here longer than anyone’s living memory. Only those under Otho’s command are allowed to keep their weapons on their person, all others must surrender them until they leave. The use of magic by patrons is also strictly forbidden and this has led to the Haven being, ironically, one of the safest places to enjoy oneself in the city.   The biggest part of the facility is an arena that houses nearly 300 spectators at once, this amphitheatre regularly hosts fights for the entertainment of Otho’s ‘guests’. The arena itself is small, only forty feet in diameter, but it plays host to myriad contests. Aspiring combatants can find both riches and (limited) fame in the arena, leading to it becoming a potential path out of poverty for many in the city if they manage to survive. Combat is normally between two consenting volunteers, but can occasionally involve creatures obtained by Otho’s people for special occasions. Fights are occasionally lethal, but as a rule a contestant yielding is respected and healing is onhand beneath the arena for both the conqueror and the vanquished.   Above and overlooking the arena is a comfortable bar, serving some of the more exotic liquor in the city. The bar is nicknamed the ‘Halo’ due to its circular shape and the fact that it crowns the arena. Set off from the bar are small, private alcoves where patrons can go to enjoy themselves more privately. This lets citizens of Bastion express themselves in ways they wouldn’t be able to elsewhere, including for mixing of species that would be frowned upon elsewhere. The bar is primarily run by a Gnome immigrant, Loki Sparkwhistle and his wife, Sandra and they add a pinch of fey magic to some of the top shelf spirits to give them a unique twist.   Otho can normally be found in the Halo, in a luxurious alcove kept private by their own protectors. The first is a Changeling known as Daq who enjoys unsettling those around him by changing his features to match their own. Upon first inspection many would assume they are unarmed but sequestered within their clothes are half a dozen poisoned daggers ready for use should the need arise. The second is an enormous, tattooed Orc, known as Nugget who has her Greataxe with her at all times who speaks very little, but communicates volumes with a single snarl. When fights in the Arena aren’t as spirited as Otho would like, he can occasionally be encouraged to send Nugget in to compete, for the amusement of many.
