Moss Goblins

Nothing could have prepared me for my first experience meeting the Moss Goblins. Such a friendly and welcoming group of goblins I had never before seen, and I was delighted when they invited me to sup with them. It was an experience like no other, and it was with great regret when, a full week after our first meeting, I was forced to bid them farewell. I have now visited them nearly a dozen times, and their home remains one of my favourite places to visit.   -Wynth Onyxorb, bard of the Singing History Guild

Culture

Major language groups and dialects

Moss Goblins most commonly speak the expected goblinoid language, with many of them also speaking common. However, they have evolved their own dialect that includes many nature-based words and phrases, and much of their slang is based on this.

Shared customary codes and values

Moss Goblins have given themselves over to the worship and veneration of nature in all of its abundance. While most goblins are strictly carnivores, Moss Goblins have adapted their diets to include plants of various sorts. They maintain gardens and grow herbs, and many of them plant and nurture fruit trees.   While these goblins gain much of their nutrients through plants, their physiology demands that they meat be included in their diets. Thus, they hunt animals for sustenance, but never hunt more than they need, and refuse to kill animals for reasons other than survival.

Common Etiquette rules

These creatures are found to be much more inclusive and friendly than the goblin race in general. They never take without asking and will always share with those in need, so long as the ones with whom they are sharing do not treat them badly. They welcome other sentient beings into their territory, and it is customary to always offer to share a meal, and occasionally a place to shelter, with those they encounter.   Amongst themselves, they are all expected to take part in the upkeep of the communal gardens; and will always help others among them who might encounter difficulties.

Common Dress code

The only commonality in dress among the Moss Goblins is that they never wear non-plant-based clothing. While they will make tents, drinkware, and other such things from the skins of animals they have killed for sustenance, they will not wear the flesh of other creatures.

Art & Architecture

Most of these goblins do not indulge in artistic pursuits, although occasionally one can be found who enjoys creating art. This usually comes in the form of decorative pottery or dishes, with occasional woodcarvers showcasing their crafts. Their architecture is simple. While most of their kind dwell in caves, or even underground, the Moss Goblins live in tents that are carefully crafted to keep out the elements. There is always a larger building that resides at the center of their encampment, usually made of clay, where meetings and other gatherings take place. This building is also used during dangerous weather occurrences; and is built to be large enough to fit all of the inhabitants of their camp, along with their belongings, should that be needed.

Common Customs, traditions and rituals

The culture of these strange goblins broke off from mainstream goblin culture nearly two hundred years ago. A group grew tired of having to fight for everything and being slaves and shock troops for whoever might want to use them as such. Migrating away from common goblin territory, they found unused land that they could cultivate and abide in peace and relative safety.   While at first, their impulse was to drive off predators in the area with whom they would have to compete, they soon found that their tendency to over-hunt was going to necessitate them migrating more to find another habitable place to live. It was then that they decided they would try to live in relative peace with the land around them. While it was difficult getting used to eating things other than meet, they soon grew accustomed to the practice and found great satisfaction in engaging in less bloodshed.
