Aussenseiter

The Aussenseiter culture is that descended from the folk originally to the east of the County of Barovia, before the Mists came. They were known as a frontier people, marginally a part of the Kingdom of Zarossia as a client mercenary state. Many Aussenseiter joined the colonisation effort of the County under Strahd von Zarovich, and some of their elite — most notably House Wachter of Vallaki — assimilated into the growing Barovian culture.
Now, few Aussenseiter remain within the County, though some nomadic groups persist around Mount Ghakis — specifically the Shattered-Fang Tribe — being remnants of the imported mercenaries who never swore fealty to Strahd. Beyond the Mists, however, the Aussenseiter culture remains strong.
