The Exile Reef

The Exile Reef is, in fact, an archipelago. It is a collection of islands located far south of Aldenia, actually situated closer to the continent of Suriima.

Discovery

The place that became known as the Exile Reef was original found during the Age of Discovery by early Elven explorers. In a time when the Faird'Eldae mindset was not frowned upon, these Elves went out into the world, sometimes with aid from the humans in particular, and founded some of main cultures on other continents that still exist to this day - notably those in Suriima and Maressea in Mysandros. However, unlike those civilisations, those that found what at the time they called Fian'Ilenae left the islands almost as soon as they arrived. In surviving records, the explorers note the wild and dangerous creatures that inhabit the island. They speak of terrible ancient beasts.

Becoming The Exile Reef

Initially, Fian'Ilenae became a location where traitor and mutineers would be left by their ship captains as punishment for their actions. Much like the Soloon Republic and their approach to lawbreakers by giving them the option of swimming back to the mainland, it was seen as a fair punishment since it did allow the chance of survival, however slim.
Over time, mainland civilisations began to adopt this as a choice for those given the death sentence.

What Lurks In The Reef

Over the years, expeditions have been made to the island to document its flora and fauna. Since the diaries of the original explorers speak of ancient creatures, one hope is finding such creatures that may hold desirable properties. However, most expeditions never return and those that do warn not to send more.
Some speak of giant lizard-like creatures, similar to those that stalk the jungles of Suriima, but even more deadly and vicious. What makes The Exile Reef particularly dangerous is that even if you try to use the seas as your source of food, there is plenty that lurks even in the shallows that can kill you.
