Frosthammer Wall

You'd think it is covered in snow just by the name. Except the wall is too far south for snow except in the winter months.
— Arardrurra Steelcoat, Tavern Keeper

Overview

A great wall meant to protect the Kingdom of Vhara from the inevitable invasion by the Kingdom of Helia. It is a massive structure that has two distinct segments, a northern wall and a southern wall. The northern wall will stretch from the northern slopes of the Valtava Mountains to the coast of the Occulus Sea. The southern wall will stretch from the southern slopes of the Valtava Mountains to the Shizukana Sea. These two walls are fitted towers constructed at regular intervals and only a few well guarded gates.   The wall was named after the Kings of Vhara, King Arrek Frosthammer, and King Fozik Frosthammer.

Debated Utility

Many question the wisdom of spending resources to constructed a great stone wall. Many with knowledge of military tactics will be quick to point out that walls are at best a delaying measure. It is likely that the Kings of Vhara know this, but they continue to make every effort to see that the walls are finished and well armed. However, time and limited resources may not be on their side.

Running out of Time

As with most projects that are exceedingly ambitious, the Frosthammer Wall remains unfinished as of 1277AGC. Delays in the acquisition of materials and design revisions have delayed the projects completion. The project has been further delayed by unexpected properties of the terrain, wildlife, and bandits. Many wonder if this wall will prove to be the next Biser wall.

A Wall of Siege Engines

While the wall has yet to seal Vhara's territories from those controlled by Helia, many kinds of siege engines have been placed upon and behind the wall. The intended use of these engines is not to batter down enemy fortifications. The intended use of the siege engines is to inflict massive casualties to any army approaching the wall. The siege engines of the Frosthammer Wall include onagers, balistas, and scorpios. The most notable siege engine is the Sivistr Trebuchet, a massive trebuchet that can hurl many kinds of projectiles at great range. It is suspected that Vhara has been stockpiling magically enhanced projectiles to bolster the effectiveness of all of these weapons.

A Wall of Traps

Many observers have noted that there appears to be construction efforts behind the main stonework of the wall. It is believed that an at present indeterminable number and variety of traps are being set behind the wall. Most of these traps seem to be hidden after they are set. It is probable that these traps range from hidden spikes to enchanted runes. It seems unlikely that Vhara has the resources to set elaborate traps along the entire length of the wall but it seems an effort is being made nonetheless. It seems to be an admission that all the stone wall will accomplish is to slow down the enemy.

The Wall's True Purpose

If the wall is not expected to stop Helia's push into Vhara, then why take the time and effort to build it in the first place? Many have asked this question over the years and there has yet to be a good answer. Perhaps there is something about this wall that has eluded observation and/or understanding. Perhaps this project was never what it seemed. One theory that has been proposed is that the wall hides the entrances to many secret chambers. Another theory is that the "incomplete" wall is meant to funnel enemy troops to specific points to allow for a more efficient defense. Neither theory has been confirmed.

Domestic Debate

The Vharans are hardly unified in their opinion of the wall.   Some argue that it is the best option at stopping the Helian invasion. That the wall presents a forward fortified position from which Vhara's army can engage the enemy at Vhara's border.   Others argue that it is a waste of resources. That the stone could've been used to fortify towns and villages or even the Carved Citadel of Aevi itself.

Note(s) from the Archivists

Maybe they just like walls? - Archivist Bob    They could've been using the stone for something else. - Archivist Edward   Maybe they just needed to put the leftover stone they get from hollowing out a mountain. The wall is just an elaborate dumping ground. - Archivist Bob   There has been no evidence of a project on THAT scale. Hollowing out a mountain would be a big deal. - Archivist Edward
