Kalashtar

It's like a shadow on the wall. The whispers of Furorum are always there, scratching at the back of my mind. It never goes away. And when I sleep, it becomes even worse. As I can see it, the madness, the unreality of Furorum. I can see what the spirit I connected to ran from, the pain or madness it felt when the Elders tore it from its home and shoved it into my body. Sometimes it'll quiet down and I find myself in other people's dreams but other times, it screams. It screams and screams and it's absolutely maddening. But I am not mad!

Basic Information

Genetics and Reproduction

Kalashtar reproduce in the manner their host body does. However, there is no guarantee the spirit they're connected to will pass on its connection to their children as well. It is random at best but enough Kalasthar children are born to keep the species as a whole going.

Additional Information

Perception and Sensory Capabilities

Due to their connections with the Furorum spirits, Kalashtar have some latent psychic abilities such as telepathy. They do not truly dream either, their minds drawn into the madness of Furorum when they sleep or to the memories of those they are connected to. It is said they can even become part of nearby people's dreams when they sleep.

Civilization and Culture

History

Kalashtar were born from the machination of the Elders, wanting to see what new aberrations they could make from the people of Avestra. It didn't matter what race they were but they took spirits from Furorum, known as Furors, and shoved them into their bodies. Many lost their minds to the madness but some of the spirits they chose became symbiotic with the host body. Thus, the Kalashtar were born. At first, they were servants of the Elders, serving as spies and assassins to cause chaos across Avestra.

The Eternals, especially Eno, couldn't allow these people to be tortured any longer. They served the connection between the Kalashtar and the Elders freeing them. Even as the Elders made more Kalashtar, the Eternals kept freeing them over. In the aftermath of the Elder Invasion, the Kalashtar found themselves changed. The world viewed them as abominations and slaves to the Aberrations and often treated them with brutality and fear. Now, the Kalashtar hide their true nature as best as they can, looking for a place where they can be accepted. More often, they have gone to the Eternals, seeing them as one of the few people who can accept them.

Interspecies Relations and Assumptions

Kalasthar attempt to get along with the other planartouched with mixed results. Aasimar who follow Celestials first treat them with distrust to find either whether they are spies for the Elders or not. The Genasi and Tieflings are willing to accept them with open arms as they are often ostracized by the world around them. Even when these turn out to be spies, the two are willing to accept that risk in exchange for the Kalashtar having a safe place.

The Kalashtar often see the Eternals as their saviors for severing their ties to the Elders and granting them free will. If an Eternal is in the region, it is common to see Kalasthar flock behind them to aid them with whatever they need. On the other end, they despise the Elders for what they did to them. But some do believe in their goals, supposedly having the whispers of Furorum always echoing in their minds and through the spirits they are connected to.
