Dread Wyvern

In the lush forests of the Draigmaw vale, all know to flee before the Dread Wyvern. Its roar is like thunder, the beat of its wings is a hurricane and it is swifter than any horse.   These beast flies high over the tree canopies and open fields. Once it has spotted prey, it will swoop toward it with tremendous speed and its approaching shadow is often the only warning.   If its sight is set upon your party, pray only that you are not the slowest one.

Basic Information

Anatomy

Like lesser Wyvern, the Dread variant has powerful wings and a wickedly barbed tail. A row of spines run the length of its back and its scales are as dark as midnight with stark yellow stripes that run along its back.

Genetics and Reproduction

The Dread Wyvern of Draigmaw is thought to be a unique creature, but in truth is a mated pair of traditional wyvern who have nested in a cave of Avarite crytals and have mutated almost beyond recognition. Though no young have yet been successfully reared, traditional wyverns lay clutches of 2-3 eggs which mature over the course of several months.

Growth Rate & Stages

From the survivors reports The Dread Wyvern is twice the size of a typical wyvern and has grown longer talons and sharper teeth.

Ecology and Habitats

The Dread wyverns makes their nest in the Thunderfall Hills deep within Draigmaw Vale. It is a temperate area, teeming with wildlife. No known villages or cities exist in the vale so all reports are taken from eyewitness accounts.

Dietary Needs and Habits

They are carnivores who typically leaves its nest to hunt every few days. Dread Wyverns must consume large amounts of meat before returning to its lair and slumbering for several days.

Biological Cycle

The only known pair of Dread Wyverns are in their fifth decade of life. Lives that has been unnaturally prolonged by the vast amounts of magical energies they have absorbed from nesting near raw Avarite. The Dread Wyvern hibernates for several days of each week before hunting. In the winter months, these hibernation cycles can last up to a few weeks.
