Kingdom of Edea

The Kingdom of Edea is a sovereign state spanning the southern half of the continent of Edea. Formed from 7 regional powers, the Kingdom is the heart of the global influence, rich in commerce, science, magic and culture. States across the world vie for influence and embassy within the borders of the Kingdom, and for representatives to be heard before the Astrium. Over its 1300 years of prosperity, the Kingdom has seen the rise and fall of many rulers, establishments and status quo as the nation has tackled to keep its many peoples united.

Government

While the state refers to itself as a Kingdom, it lends itself closer to an Imperial rule. The state is governed by an acting Lord Monarch, a King or Queen of noble descent, who is elected by the Astrium: a council of mages who oversee the stability of the state and advise the Crown on foreign and domestic policy.
Each region of the Kingdom has its own level of autonomy, and subsidiarity is a prevalent feature of the hierarchical government design. Lord Archdukes are assigned to each region, the seven of whom sit on the Astrium alongside their assigned mages.
Below them, Lord Dukes rule over particular aspects of each region's governance. These vary between regions, but they often take roles such as agriculture, regional security, mining or commerce.
Earls and Barons reside in Cities and Towns respectively to govern over local matters. Oversight of these individuals may vary depending on the governing style of their Dukes or Archdukes, but the Astrium frequently is reluctant in stepping in if a particular local nuisance arises in the region.

Defences

The national military of the Kingdom of Edea is the crowns guard, made up of a separate domestic and defensive division.
The domestic division patrols major cities and towns, ensuring peace and orderliness amongst the citizenry of the kingdom. Militia guards are permitted in some regions of the Kingdom, though often work through contract or treaty with local town guards, rarely as autonomous bodies. Dressed in green uniforms, these are a common site throughout the kingdom and are a mostly peaceful force.
The defensive division of the crowns guard is mandated with the defence of the nation and individual states from external threats. These are often present in towns alongside domestic divisions, though enforce less through patrol and more through warrant and searches of suspicious material. They are found primarily in the borders of individual states and the larger borders of the nation, either within or moving between the border settlements. These are identified through a distinctive red uniform.   The crowns guard has a similar hierarchy to the government. A cardinal general sits on the Astrium as a direct adviser to the king, and looks over 14 Cardinals. Two cardinals operate in each state, one responsible for the defensive division, and one for the domestic division. These cardinals command a set of officers and report activities to the Cardinal General. Officers of the domestic guard oversee town guard leaders, individuals who operate the guards within settlements. Defensive guard officers command garrisons of soldiers, broken into distinct divisions, led by Lieutenants.

Infrastructure

The past 700 years of peace has seen an extraordinary growth in investment and innovation in infrastructure has seen civilisation brought to all corners of Edea. Farming and mining assisted by Magic developed by the Astrium has seen growth in population and food supply, and roads and waterways connecting previously remote villages has seen increased trade and commerce within and between states. Magnificent seafaring vessels and the rare skyship has seen created rich coastal cities with ports spanning miles wide, bringing foreign goods into the nation, and allowing for large quantities of goods to be brought from one side of the kingdom to the other.

History

The state was formed in the year 312AT after centuries of conflict and strife amongst the human nations of Edea post-schism. Over the waning decades of the The Wars of Men, between 280 and 300AT, the various empires, kingdoms and dynasties which grew and amassed power across the south began to fail under the weight of famine, poverty and revolution within their own borders after nearly 300 years of endless conflict. The most powerful entity at the time was the Kingdom of Eden, the most wealthy and prosperous nation which completely encompassed the Lake of Bordask. The incredible agriculture and mineral rich mines below the lent itself to advanced settlements and strong willed populations, and a region known colloquially as Paradise, or Eden.   Over these final stages of the war, the Kingdom tore through the south, bringing peace to many major tribal, religious and territorial conflicts, forming the state of Eskia. With a united forces of now the most prosperous nation on the face of Edea, the armies of Eden, made up of much of the remnant of the military forces of Edea, swept westward, expanding its reach towards the west coast. In 312AT, a formal peace treaty was signed between Eskia, Unmar and Whitecherish, dubbed the Treaty of Edea, and the formal declaration of the new Kingdom of Edea was announced to all peoples. Over the two and half centuries following the emperor's revolution, the Kingdom expanded further westward, taking through a dominating hand Taleos and Riddemarsh, two kingdoms which had been growing in magnitude during the time of peace which followed the signing of the Treaty. The last state to join was Y'tzel, a nation of Half Elves who were reluctant to join the Kingdom from their isolated home to the East of the The Undareen. In 847, Y'tzel finally joined forces with the Kingdom after a series of wars with Orcs saw the first formal alliance between human and elven kind for over a thousand years.   In 1500, the Independent Peoples of Sanguine pushed to secede from the regional states of Whitecherish and Eskia and join the neutral northern wildlands, however a further amendment to the treaty of Edea saw a new, seventh state implemented by a government focuses on peace and unity following the Orc War. Over the past 100 years, Sanguine has slowly began to move northward, bringing neutral towns and cities under the banner of a more expansionist kingdom sponsored by the Astrium.   For a detailed account, see the History of the Kingdom of Edea.
