Elves

Basic Information

Anatomy

Elves are humanoid with slender more angular features and commonly known for their elongated pointed ears, elves typically fall into one of four sub-sects of the species.   Nireli or "high elves," are noble haughty beings that claim origin from the gods themselves. They occupy the mystical city of Eyathrion, deep in the magical island nation of Nyrellhei. They're fair skinned, with very narrow pointed features.   Their "lesser" cousins, born of the "natural world" are the Taurë "wood elves" of the Feywood, are less uptight than their cousins. Though they still revere Eyathrion and help to protect its borders. They tend to not be as fair skinned as their Nireli cousins.   Their "esoteric" cousins, born of the "kunar world" are the Ithil "moon elves" of the Feywood. More secluded than their cousins, they try to remain unknown and reclusive. Protecting their hidden glades and keeping to themselves. Their flesh is more of a pink-purplish hue, it is not uncommon for males to possess a more blue hued skin tone.   Finally, in the mountain caverns and the necropolises below the surface, live the subterranean "dark elves," the Morifinwë. These elves have been (rightfully or wrongfully) vilified by their cousins for dabbling in blood magic, which allegedly corrupted their souls, driving them beneath the surface of the world. Due to their lack of exposure to the surface world their skin has taken on a more gray tone, varying in tone from blue-gray to a more purplish-gray.   Their elongated ears are naturally predisposed to hearing better. Most elves experience heightened sight due to their time spent in the wilds and among their tomes.   Elves tend to stay out of human politics until the need arises for them to begrudgingly engage. With the exception of the Nireli a great many of them are starting to join the world at large and not remain as reclusive.

Biological Traits

Elves do not sleep. Instead they meditate deeply, remaining semi-conscious, for four hours a day. The Common word for this meditation is "trance". While meditating, they dream after a fashion; such dreams are actually mental exercises that have become reflexive after years of practice. After resting in this way, they gain the same benefit a human would from eight hours of sleep.   Their fey ancestry makes them resistant to charm effects, and immune to being put to sleep by magic.

Nireli tend to be more studious and regimented granting them an additional language and elven weapon proficincies.

Taurë
are fleet footed allowing them to move with greater speed and grace, from a lifetime among the forests. Additionally their training among the wilds grants them elven weapon training.

Ithil
are born with innate magics of the moon.

Morifinwë
having grown accustomed to the darker conditions below the surface see exceptionally well in the dark. On the other hand their lack of exposure to the the surface can be known to cause sunlight sensitivity among them. Training to face the dangers of the underdark grant them Morifinwë weapon proficiency.

Growth Rate & Stages

Although elves reach physical maturity at the same age as humans, the elven understanding of adulthood goes beyond physical growth to encompass worldly experience. An elf typically claims adulthood around the age of 75, retaining their youthful looks nearly into their elder years, only showing signs of age around 600 years old. They can live to be 750 years old or older, though natural death is expected to occur around 710-750.

Ecology and Habitats

Although elves can be seen in any society willing to accept them, they feel most at home among nature such as forests and meadows. Nature is revered as its own sentient entity, deserving of respect and reverence.

Dietary Needs and Habits

An elven diet is notoriously light, often consisting of smaller portions of fish or meat and berries, nuts, or other fruit and vegetables. Elven wine is often a tasty, sweet beverage that while containing alcohol, is meant more for consumption and not simply intoxication.

Additional Information

Geographic Origin and Distribution

Predominantly found on the island off the eastern coast of Angimarr in the Kingdom of Nyrellhei. It is become more commonplace for them to venture out beyond their land to become a part of the larger world of Aurelimoore, with the exception of the Nireli whom tend to stay in seclusion inside the elven lands.

Average Intelligence

Elves are rather intelligent, having significantly longer lifespan allows for deeper stores of knowledge from their experiences. This manifests not only in their designs and architecture, but their clear propensity towards magic. Although not all elves are cut out to be wizards and sorcerers, they are naturally more apt to show arcane ability than many other races.

Perception and Sensory Capabilities

Accustomed to twilit forests and the night sky, you have superior vision in dark and dim conditions. They can see in dim light within 60 feet as if it were bright light, and in darkness as if it were dim light. they can't discern color in darkness, only shades of gray.   Their keen senses make them exceptionally perceptive.

Naming Traditions

Elven names are often meant to sound melodic and can sometimes be complex. Surnames are meant to act as a second verse to the 'song' that is a name. It is a good surname if it flows smoothly from the first name. A family intent on having children and passing down their surname will often fashion the child's first name to compliment their last.   Male: Aelrindel, Mallanas, Evelaindil, Erendriel   Female: Ilythyrra, Jhaerithe, Ciradyl   Surname: Eilsalor, Xilsandoral, Oriwenys
