Great Western Ocean

For Hundreds of years, the Great Western Ocean (sometimes called the Atlantic) stood as a barrier between Atlantica and the rest of the civilized kingdoms. Ancient Writings acknowledged the existence of Atlantica from the times of the K'thonum, but they were largely ignored by the kingdoms that survived the collapse of the Remen Empire. Since a crossing between Atlantica and the rest of the world takes weeks and is only broken by the Western Archipelagos, this expanse was an unlikely and unprofitable crossing.

Dangers of the Ocean

Time on a ship can be a killer. Food is hard to maintain, water sometimes even harder as it goes bad and is not replaceable. The crew becomes harder and harder to control as time goes on. Most of the Great Western Ocean is vast watery nothing, with no "short route" across except for the Western Archipelagos, ending in the Maple Islands, and still days of nothing after that. Even early explorers that did cross from the Maple islands would never be heard from again, lost to the dangers of the The Dark Coast. There was nothing there to find of any interest but deadly ruins and twisted creatures.   It is not unreasonable, then, that no one returned from Atlantica across this great expanse for many years until Pedro Ataide who made the journey to the Dark Coast three times but finally died on the last voyage. His explorations opened trade between the peaceful people of Boriken and the Castillia and eventually the whole of the exploration of Atlantica.
