The Hole of Tartessos

On the first day of The Great Darkening mages from around the world secretly met in the ancient city of Tartessos and cast a spell they hoped would expel the K'Thonum from this world.  Attempting to utilize the K'Thonum's own magical network against them, the Antikathonum performed a ritual that unfortunately backfired and destroyed the entire city and surrounding area. The Hole of Tartessos is what remains of that ancient explosion.  Scholars have measured the hole to be a perfect circle 30 miles across, and presumably part of a spherical hole that goes equally deep.  Scholarly articles in libraries of mages however do not always translate into what is received by the common man, and so legends abound about the Hole and the area around it. Time has passed since the Great Darkening, and the Hole has been filled in by a bay connected directly to the Western Ocean.  The culture that was Tartessian has long since passed from this world and its language with it. However, to this day the Hole and the region around it occasionally spawn strange creatures. Locals refuse to fish in the bay, and the reasons abound.  Sometimes, fishermen that dare to do so do not return, their boats are found drifting in the circular current, or sometimes even the boats are never seen again.  There are rumors of giant whirlpools that will drown whole ships.  Scholars have attempted to verify this but with no success, and even one scholar disappeared attempting to do so. Locals that dare to spend the night in the region claim that they have heard the voices of the dead of the disaster, sometimes whispering and sometimes quite loudly.  The words spoken are never understood, not that any of the locals stick around to listen once they begin to hear the voices. Perhaps the most frightening are the occasional twisted creatures that emerge from the region.  These are well documented by scholars, who have several theories as to where they come from, or how these abominations come to existence in the first place.
