The Sea of Three Crowns

Upon the sea, where ceaseless motion reigns, ships glide like graceful dancers, their vibrant sails a kaleidoscope upon the waves. Among them, Asteasean trade vessels stand as radiant beacons, ferrying dreams and treasures from realms afar. In my reverie, I envision the harbors they visit, the cultures they embrace, and the peoples they encounter in their perpetual voyage.
  • The Chronicler Oswin, on his journey from Amnor to Asteasea.
  • The Sea of Three Crowns is an elongated embayment located within the larger expanse of The Singing Sea, nestled between The Kingdom of Amnor and the Kingdom of Kholdor to the north, and The Kingdom of Olrion, Asteasea, and The Principality of Stormar to the south. Covering a vast area of approximately 215,000 square kilometers, this enchanting sea is named after the three original countries that bordered it, although it currently shares its shores with five nations. It flows seamlessly into the Singing Sea through a narrow channel known as the Dragon's Mouth or the Strait of Valura, situated between the Asteasea peninsula and the southern Kholdor coast.   The Sea of Three Crowns played a pivotal role in the economy of the region, especially during the days of Avartian rule. Within five years of Avartia's withdrawal from Eldvar, the sea became the exclusive domain of the Asteasean navy, with only certified merchant vessels permitted to navigate its waters. Today, it remains a vital trade route for a diverse array of goods, ranging from spices to grains and even slaves, originating from across the known world. The Sea of Three Crowns remains a bustling hub of commerce, facilitating trade and cultural exchange among the nations it touches.   This enchanting sea boasts several small islands, many of which still harbor ancient ruins from its imperial past. These islands also hold sacred significance to the native Eldvari people who once inhabited them. Legend has it that the mighty dragon Astazi, after whom Asteasea is named, rests in slumber on one of these islands, adding an aura of mystique to the sea.

    Climate

The Sea of Three Crowns experiences a relatively calm climate during the warmer months, making it an ideal route for maritime trade. However, during the colder months, it can be subject to sudden and violent storms, testing the skills and courage of the seafarers who ply its waters.

    History

The historical significance of the Sea of Three Crowns stretches back over a millennium. Avartian presence in the region dates back to at least 1500 years ago when the first colonies were established along the southern coast of the sea. These colonies, initially established for their abundant grain resources and connections to the native Eldvari peoples inhabiting the sea's hinterlands, gradually grew in size and importance. Within 750 years, permanent Avartian communities flourished around the sea, and a thriving trade network interconnected the entire region with the vast Avartian Empire across The Singing Sea.   While these colonies maintained close cultural ties to Avartia, over time, they began to develop their own distinct culture. The city of Asteasea, established as a permanent province, marked The Avartian Empire's first foothold on the continent of Eldvar. Even after gaining independence, Asteasea continued to exert significant influence over the Sea of Three Crowns and the trade that flowed through its waters.
