Aegrion Hegemony

The Black Rose

Aegrion is an odd kingdom because it has only one city, and only a tiny sliver of its land is habitable. Aegrion is divided into four main sections: The Blightlands, The Desert of Myrhh, Lineria, and the Aegrion frontier. The Blightlands and the Frontier are both uninhabitable wastelands whose only features of note are the small pools of crystal that allow mystics to receive glimpses of the future and their vast distance separating Lineria from her colonies. The Desert of Myrhh mainly produces magical supplies and ores that are refined within Lineria.   Lineria is the only permanent settlement within Aegrion’s mainland; from its ivory walls caravans cross the parched desert to trade with The Reikvaldt and the Old Wood, and from its massive wharfs the Aegrion trade fleet crosses the Ramus Ocean to the Outer Isles, the “new world”, and the Mist Sea Coast on the far southern edge of the continent. Lineria is an empire, with far flung colonies separated by a vast ocean, and ruled by the immortal wizard-king Joshua Sinclaire and his royal council of eleven, one from each of the High Houses, and one for each of the Trading Houses. Each High House is vested with power in a certain field: War, Law, Trade, Industry, Fishing, Magic, and Religion; and each Trading House is vested with a particular colony: The Mist Sea Colonies, The Easterling Colonies, The Skyros Colonies, and the Outer Isles. Additionally, each of the High Houses has two smaller houses associated with it (for example, the House of Law, Hlaalu, is associated with the House of Secrets, Merrick, and the House of Mercy, Pallus).   Lineria’s highly formalized and long-established political system has afforded it great stability and an associated level of prosperity. Much like Hallecyon, Lineria stakes its economy on the creation and sale of magical goods: potions, spell scrolls, power crystals, familiars, and golems are all created and exported to provide Lineria with what it cannot create for itself; and what Lineria cannot gain this way, it takes from its colonies. There is an almost limitless supply of goods flowing into Lineria from her colonies, and chief among them are the pseudo-slaves: the Calicalis. While Lineria’s food supply is provided mainly from the sea, whole districts of the city are dedicated to magical green houses and floating farms which provide food to support its populace.   Lineria’s population is heavily divided across class lines: there are specific districts of the city are for the wealthy and the poor, and a special pass is required to travel between them. Each district has a wall separating it from the other districts of the city and from the outside world. These walls are guarded by The Watchers, an organization of governmental informants and law keepers who oversee the city with an iron fist. Anyone, no matter how young or old, rich or poor, could be an informant for The Watchers, and if you threaten the stability of the city you will be under their eyes. In every district of the city, The Watchers’ guards can be found patrolling the streets and breaking up fights. Slavery, while technically made illegal in Lineria after a war between The Reikvaldt and Lineria, is still a widely accepted practice that remains highly prevalent throughout the city thanks to Lineria’s draconic laws of servitude (the Ordem Calicalis).   The military of Aegrion is focused on two things: keeping away the dark forces that threaten the Aegrion frontier, and subjugating the resistance in its colonies. Formed primarily of riders and other light forces, Aegrion fields some of the best cavalry on the continent. Aegrion’s navy is nothing to scoff at either, possessing the second largest navy on the continent, next to the Velemin, the single largest under a unified command, and most importantly: the only truly deep-water navy on the continent, Aegrion has a military presence all the way south to the Mist Sea Coast across the wastes, and as far east as Tanelorn and the “new world”. The elites of the Aegrion military are the Star Struck Seers, elite, giant-eagle riding wizards who use their powers to perform raids deep behind enemy lines.
