The Marches are a rather vague term for the patchwork of Nevarine successor states that cropped up with the decline of the eastern empire. The realms of the Marches often adhere to a more feudal government structure, with the realm’s governance centered around a local noble’s keep and the retainers and knights that they employ. Given the Marches’ open plains and wide areas for grazing, the realms of the Marches are often heavily based on horseback, and a ruler’s power often only extends as far as their fastest rider. The Marches are heavily devout, devoted to the Division of Gaea and were the primary opponents of the Divinate in the Iconomachy. Before the Great War from 311-315 AA, the realm of Malvan was by far the dominant force, but with the subsequent invasion of the Bagdud the realm has shrunk to a small scrap between the Red River’s tributaries and the Lowback Mountains. Now the Marches are much more close knit than before, and even with the common wars between them, have organized to defend against an invasion from the Bagdud if need be.
