Southmarcher (south-marcha)

The people of Southmarch were the original inhabitants of The Carcernatorum, long before the city was even established as a mining post or named. Historians and forensics have discovered that their existence even predates The Hives, though this information is often dismissed by Breach-King Jakobi as an exaggeration. Despite the fact it's wildly denied that humankind settled on Carce before the Breach-King, remnants of the original Southmarch buildings still exist along the shores of the Island -- the rest has been demolished over time to make way for brickwork and Blood-moss fields. Southmarchers themselves are more upfront about their origins; they claim their people traversed the Depths in order to escape an unknown threat several centuries ago, finding and settling on the harsh and desolate island as a last resort. The need for alternate resources resulted in the development of Fleshwork in order to construct buildings and various tools. The new science allowed the people to scrape up and build a stubborn existence from the dead creatures that washed ashore - and they're well known to be master of the art despite the Watch's attempt to privatise and outlaw it's practise by those outside their scholarships. Southmarchers keep the true secrets of Fleshwork away from the Carcernatorum the best they can, with only the elders and trusted members of the family allowed to learn and practise within The Tarred Scales. While Southmarchers come in a broad variety of ethnicities and physical looks, one thing noted by others is how common albinism as a trait is; even with two parents not carrying the gene, a Southmarch child may be born with albinism anyway. The reasons for this are unknown, but this trait has resulted in the majority of humans dwelling on Alendal to believe the majority of people who live below the surface are pale-skinned and white haired, despite fact they are a minority within the Carcernatorum. It's also commonly told amongst campfires that the people born Below have webbed fingers and gills, and while this is greatly exaggerated it is known that Southmarchers have increased lung capacity and better night vision than anyone originating from the Surface; most likely due to the proximity of physically altering arcane crystals and the lack of sun spurring a speedy adaption to the pressure and darkness Below.
