Fleshwork
Fleshwork, while not a common profession, is also known to be the profession that built Carce itself -- outside the bricks and stone brought in from the Surface, The Carcernatorums' outer rings were mostly constructed using a mixture of labour and fleshwork to physically alter dead material into hardier resources. Said to be tied in with necromancy, the art is considered more tied to the re-engineering of dead flesh than the reanimation of it. Scales and bone can be hardened and warped to form tiles and roof-slates, and skilled fleshworkers are said to be able to manipulate the flesh of the living too.
While Fleshwork can be considered as simple as making bone walls more durable and water-tight, the technology has expanded into the construction of mechanical objects, using a mixture of arcane power, biology and clever physics to create 'living' objects that serve a distinct purpose.
Now an exclusive knowledge only given to those who can afford the tuition fees, men and women who show aptitude for Fleshwork are quickly pushed to be medics, scientists or engineers.
In far less officially run corners, the original art of taking gifts from the ocean shore still remains; Southmarchers view Fleshwork to be a spiritual art above a practical one, and keep their rituals under wraps. There are some, however, said to offer their services for a price.
The most recent leap of technological advancement in Fleshwork is the creation of The Godtooth; the citys' first living war-vessel.
Utility
The use of Fleshwork is broad, though mostly confined to two main areas -- construction, or forensics. While the medical uses are valuable, the Watch has utilised Fleshwork as a way of investigating crime scenes or repairing the dead to discern identities or otherwise hidden details.
Access & Availability
Fleshwork outside use permitted by the Wardens is strictly prohibited; while the practise originated from Southmarch, the Carcernatorum Academy now claims to be the sole place to learn the art of Fleshwork - to the point of claiming that the construction of Southmarch or any work done without a licence is simply clever building or trickery rather than any kind of arcane art.
Discovery
The discovery of Fleshwork lies within Southmarch; originally, the craft was used by southmarchers to construct their homes from the remnants of the dead creatures washed ashore -- however, recently, the art has been expanded to the medical field; the ability to manipulate flesh and organs without the use of sharp tools - or, if one is skilled enough, the need for anaesthetic - has proven beyond valuable.
