The Tarred Scales

A cult born from the remants of devout Southmarchers after the majority of their homes were replaced with The Carcernatorum; the Tarred Scales worship the Ocean Below. While not every Southmarcher belongs to the cult, the members tend to be families that still practise the Old Ways that existed before the Watch came into play.      She is an indifferent God. She may send a bloated corpse, a gift to those capable of Fleshwork to feed and house the homeless -- and in the next tide send a wave to drag any homes or debris back from whence they came. Members of the Tarred Scales revere the dead and the debris washed ashore in benevolent tides. Most commonly they can be found amongst the Mudlarks of Carce, picking out anything that might be used in ritualistic ceremonies or local repairs; it's a well known fact that while Fleshwork is outlawed to those without a license, the Tarred Scales use a form of it that existed long before the Carcernatorum came into being. If a salvageable corpse is brought ashore, the Tarred Scales will usually be the first to find it and pick out anything valuable before the Watch Forensics arrive.      A corpse from the Ocean Below is a revered gift, and the Tarred Scales treat it as such. Whether it be in construction, science or arcane rituals, no piece will go to waste. It was said that Southmarch itself was built by the original founders of the art of fleshwork, though the Carcernatorum disputes this as 'unproven heresy'. The Tarred Scales make moves of their own against the Carcernatorum and its' Watch when they can, but since a portion of the city sunk into the ocean they've found themselves lacking the proper resources to make a real dent in the Wardens control over the island.

Structure

There is a familial structure within the Tarred Scales, with the elders of each family holding a sacred place above the rest. Often, decisions are made by the council of elders, but the vote can often be made public if a solution cannot be agreed upon by the Small Council.

Culture

Survivors in the inhospitable, scavengers or artists depending on who's asked -- what's known about the Tarred Scales is kept under lock and key.

Public Agenda

While the members of the Tarred Scales keep their identities hidden for their own wellbeing, their message can be found on every other brick outside the walls of the Carcernatorum; respecting the Island is necessary for the survival of all, and the Carcernatorum and its' Breach-King are only adding instability and pollution to the land.    In the past, there have been attacks on factories -- and even assassination attempts on Wardens -- but since the installation of the Watch and it's commander, Warden Graye, the Tarred Scales have been forced into hiding.

Assets

While the Carcernatorum Academy claims to have the finest and most cutting-edge technology and knowledge of Fleshwork, their collective knowledge pales compared to the generations of knowledge passed down Southmarcher families. Their methods are kept secret, but it's not uncommon for entire buildings to appear in short spans of time.
