Martyr's Flame Condition in Ardre | World Anvil

Martyr's Flame

An affliction found chiefly in rural areas and ports. Its victims report feelings of intense burning the lower legs or the hands, which become discolored and often die, requiring amputation. Because it is so rare in developed cities like Tsen Ikha or Laizhou, many dismiss the illness as superstition.   Martyr's Flame has a long and widely-stretching history, with cases being reported by Sagi traveling as far as western coasts of the Ferrakhilian Sea, all the way to southern tip of the Milosian Peninsula. It goes by many names (Satar's Fury, Hearth's Fire, Coal Foot, and Igetus' Foot being chief among them), and has oft been associated with religious or even revolutionary figures in history. Best known of all these is Ardour the True, the fifth Abhin, who supposedly lost both his legs below the knee, yet crawled to ancient Craed Beleth to warn the rulers of the coming Mornal Invasion.   In most parts of the world, the illness remains largely mysterious and incurable. It is only in the Batsalian Union, thanks to the medical advances of Laizhou, and in the learned towers of Yaalk, that Martyr's Flame is understood to originate from an intake of too much fungus, usually the result of poorly-prepared bread. In the eastern Batsalian Union, the illness is called Fool's Foot, a derogatory reference to the outside world's ignorance.
