The unexpected alliance between Datsua and Laizhou is largely considered the origin of the Batsalian Union. For centuries, the Datsuan Isles proved a barrier keeping the economically superior Laizhou from competing with the markets of the Bitter Sea. With the alliance, Laizhou essentially hired Datsua as a protective rather than preventative force, and the Union became one of the most powerful entities on the earth, second only to the Holy Qhaganate of Zalja.
