Church of Pearl
One of the two chief religions of Samaya.
The Church of Pearl worships Hayan Han, the First Queen, who supposedly counseled Shad the Lover in the quest to win the love of the Blue Maid and end the The Time of Water. In many myths, Hayan Han has multiple children, who watch over the holy spheres. These myths have so mixed with the legends of Sugau and his forty daughters over the centuries, that it can often be troubling to separate tales associated with either.
Because of her wisdom regarding the whims of the Blue Maid, Hayan Han is often thought to have mastery over water, and is therefore the goddess of choice for sailors, fishers, and most any who live by the water, especially peasants. The Donni Samayans in particular are believed to worship her almost exclusively, though Pearlites can be found amongst all Samayan ethnicities.
Though there are some myths and tales of Hayan Han's children and the miracles they wrought, the Church of the Pearl is largely monotheistic. Its priests reside in small stone huts, usually built by or near water.
Pearlites believe that, after death, their souls will either be drawn up in the heavens or drowned in the sea to be reborn in time. In order to ascend, they must follow the fifty-four precepts of Hayan Han, which priests spend their lives studying and interpreting.
