Wynnstan Scheuer

His Majesty Wynnstan Scheuer (a.k.a. Einarr Ragnarrsønn)

Wynnstan Scheuer was born to a family living on a homestead in the Frontier Lands. At a young age he was captured and raised by a band of Fjernhjem who brought him up as one of their own. He became one of their elite warriors and as a youth set out to adventure. As a young adult he founded the settlement of Thetil and the kingdom of Hirschtal where he rules to this day.

Physical Description

General Physical Condition

Wynnstan is in good shape and keeps himself so with daily workouts. Despite being eighty he has the physical abilities and stamina of a man half his age. This is in part due to clean living, and in part to coming across a couple of elixirs of longevity.

Body Features

Wynnstan has pale skin and burns easily in the sun. He is a large man with well defined muscles, a tribute to his upbringing and his way of life.

Facial Features

He has bushy eyebrows and a beard and mustache, which he keeps trimmed, but doesn’t shave.

Physical quirks

He is right handed and has a tendency to tug on his ear when he is deep in thought.

Special abilities

Like many barbarians he has the ability to enter into a combat rage, which enhances his strength but during which he is blinded by the rage.

Apparel & Accessories

He likes to wear clothes of scarlet and gold in the mangen style, and usually wear his well maintained hide armor over whatever he’s wearing. He eschews a formal crown instead preferring to wear a horned helmet he found on an adventure.

Specialized Equipment

The skull emblem and chains he wears is a magic item that provided him protection equivalent to plate armor. He possesses a magical battle axe of admantine, the exact properties of which he keeps secret. He also has a magical longsword he can summon to his hand magically. He does have a crown of gold and rubies that he save for formal occasions preferring to wear his (non magical) horned helmet in casual situations. He has a belt that enhances his strength, and a fey child necklace that he only wear when dealing with gnomes or fey beings. Finally he has a ring that allows him to persevere through physical or mental trauma that hampers his actions.

Mental characteristics

Personal history

Wynnstan was born to yeoman farmers living in a homestead in the Frontier Lands. As a boy he was precocious and had a terrible temper. When he was just five years of age a Fjernhjem raiding party attacked his parents homestead, killing his family and taking Wynnstan captive. The young boy was adopted by a Fjernhjem warrior named Ragnarr Ividsønn and renamed Einearr. He was raised by the tribe learning their ways and living as one of them. As an adolescent he was trained to be a warrior for the tribe, and discovered his inner rage becoming one of their elite champions. Despite everything he was always an outsider, and as a youth left to find his own way in the world. He returned to the site of his family’s homestead, where now a small community had sprung up. There he met some companions in particular the half-elven druid Merisiel Leofflæd, who taught him of the Green Faith. He adventured with them for more than a decade, before feeling a restless longing for something greater led him to leave his companions and return to the Fjernhjem who raised him. He underwent a vision quest. While on his quest he had a vision of a crown and a throne. Returning south he gathered a group of settlers and with the help of Merisiel and several other members of his old adventuring band he founded the Community of Thetil and the kingdom of Hirschtal. He has ruled their since, as an adequate ruler, made better by his seeking advice from those he deems knowledgeable in the relevant areas. He is popular with his people who view him as a good protector who largely leaves them to their own affairs.

Education

Wynnstan didn’t have a formal education, instead he learned as the Fjernhjem learn, by doing. He learned hunting, and plainscraft and a good deal of other skills that saw him well as an adventurer. He also learned the language of the manneskor people in addition to the common tongue of the mangen. He didn’t learn to read and write or do mathematics until he was an young adult, when his adventuring companions taught him the rudiments. To this day he is a slow reader though he tries to read a little every day to improve. His handwriting is terrible, and he usually employs a scribe for messages.

Accomplishments & Achievements

In many ways Wynnstan is a self-made man, having taken the lessons and skills of his adopted people and leaving to find his own fortune and place in the world. He was a good companion to the adventuring band he joined and employs many of them as aids and advisers in running his kingdom. He greatest accomplishment was the founding of his own kingdom, and seeing it prosper despite the adversity. Currently he is seeking a peace treaty and trade agreements with his adopted people the Fjernhjem, and if he succeeds this will be another feather in his cap.

Mental Trauma

Wynnstan is a spendthrift and a womanizer, both traits he hates in himself.

Intellectual Characteristics

He is fairly intelligent, slightly above average in fact. He is creative and can often come up with clever solutions to problems and has a great ability to think outside the box. However, he is no intellectual giant, and is aware of this shortcoming, so seeks advice from people he has come to trust.

Morality & Philosophy

Wynnstan is ruled by his conscience. He eschews evil yet is not committed to good in any abstract way. He takes a very live and let live attitude, which make him popular amongst his people as he sees no need for anything but the bare minimum of laws. While he is dedicated to the welfare of his people, he attempts to provide for the general welfare by interfering as little as possible and allowing his subjects to prosper or fail on their own. He is a follower of the Green Faith, and so venerates nature, and encourages his people to live in harmony with nature.

Personality Characteristics

Motivation

Wynnstan is motivated by his desire to find his place in the world. He was born mangen so doesn’t quite fit in with the manneskor, yet he was raised by the manneskor so doesn’t fit in with the mangen either. A vision he received led him to found his own kingdom, and he has found his place by being the best ruler that he can. One thing he is trying to do is create a cuture that reflects the best qualities of mangen and manneskor,

Savvies & Ineptitudes

He is very talented at plainscraft and wilderness survival in general. He is an accomplished rider and a good judge of horse flesh. He is less skilled when it comes to dealing with civilized people and relies on his advisors. It’s his advisors who have managed to prevent him from going to war with Onzethcalet. He had a bad tember as a child, and still has it, but is better able to control it as an adult. He is bad at controling hi impulses particularly when it comes to spending money or chasing women.

Likes & Dislikes

Wynnstan loves baking, and sometimes jokes he became a ruler because it’s easier to be a ruler who bakes than a baker who rules. He likes to spend money on whatever shiny trinket catches his eye. He dislikes people who waste his time, as he feels the hands of old age clutching at him. He hates people who believe that the mange civilization is inherently superior to the manneskor, having lived both and seen the virtues of both.

Virtues & Personality perks

Despite his upbringing and his temper, he is a kind and somewhat patient ruler, and does his best to rule benevolently and as little as possible. He is an accomplished and very skilled warrior and inspires his personal guard his nobles, and the militia with his willingness to get his hands dirty. His followers are less thrilled by his habit of leading from the front, especially as he doesn’t yet have an heir.

Vices & Personality flaws

He is a spendthrift and a womanizer. He has an almost compulsive need to spend money usually on useless knickknacks and trinkets. It’s gotten so bad that he has instructed his treasurer to keep him on a strict spending allowance, which seems to have curbed his ability to spend if not his desire. He also chases after women and has bedded many and doubtless has fathered a few bastards though he has yet to publicly acknowledge them. It’s his habit of chasing after attractive women that has kept him single.

Personality Quirks

He has a habit of tugging on his earlobe when he’s deep in thought over something,

Social

Contacts & Relations

He is on good terms with his neighboring ruler Leofwine Bach of Sternenhellwolf. He is on less than cordial terms with Ælfheah Handfläche of Onzethcalet. He is on strained terms with Wilken Westadt of Cektoh and Cynesige Apfelnähe of Ethfamen. He is on good terms with the members of the Fjernhjem band that adopted him, and has used that to make the acquaintance of several other leaders hoping to establish peaceful relations.

Family Ties

His birth family was killed when he was a child, and his adopted family has since passed away. He currently has no family.

Religious Views

He is a follower of the Green Faith, possibly the oldest faith in Arda. As such he strives to maintain a balance between nature and the encroach of civilization. This had led him to pass laws requiring fields to lay fallow every few years and limited the harvesting of resources in the Barrir swamp.

Social Aptitude

Wynnstan is a bit course and his manners leave something to be desired. Still he strives to make those around him feel welcome. He is a very straightforward person tending to say what’s on his mind and ask personal questions without discretion. He realizes that these traits are not looked well upon in mangen culture and he des try to suppress them with some success when dealing with mangen. However, it is these traits that have allowed him to negotiate at all with the Fjernhjem, who respect these traits.

Hobbies & Pets

While he doesn’t have any pets, he does have a collection of quality horses. Some were acquired from the south and some from the Fjernhjem and many were bred by him from both strains. Oddly for a ruler and a warrior he enjoys baking and finds some time every few days to bake some sort of treat or just a loaf of bread.

Wealth & Financial state

Wynnstan is quite wealthy, though not as wealthy as he once was, as he has been spending his accumulated wealth on improving his kingdom. Exactly how much wealth he has left from his adventuring days is uncertain, but his best estimate is somewhere excess of 100,000 gold. He taxes his people lightly thought that will have to change if he is to support the army he plans to build.
