Elmúlás (a.k.a. The Great Seer, Queen of Foresight)

The deity of destiny, fortune, oracles, and prophecy, Elmúlás is an enigmatic goddess who knows the secrets of what might be. She travels the cosmos, dispensing wisdom to those she deems worthy and, it is believed, striving to forestall some horrible doom only she is aware of. Of all the deities of Arda, she is the one most likely to interact directly with mortals, albeit in disguise, keeping her true identity a secret.

Holidays

Night of Fortune; 4th of Megir—Said to be an auspicious night for the casting of divinations. On this night the seers of Elmúlás’s shrines freely answer questions brought to them by supplicants, not requiring the usual donation for such service.

Divine Goals & Aspirations

No one is sure exactly what her goals are. As mentioned, some believe that she seeks to prevent a great catastrophe in the future, however she cannot act directly without bringing the catastrophe about, so she offers advice to try to nudge the future to a different end. Whether or not this is true is unknown as she refuses to answer questions about this topic.

Physical Description

General Physical Condition

It is impossible to guess her age, she appears young, yet has an aura that gives the impression of ancientness. She seems to be in good physical condition, all things considered, but tends to avoid direct physical action.

Body Features

Little is known about her physical appearance, as she always appears shrouded, in robes with a hood shading her face. She is short and skinny, but beyond that no one knows.

Facial Features

Her face is usually shrouded by a voluminous hood, so few have seen beyond her chin. It’s said she has brown eyes and dark brown hair with a broad nose.

Apparel & Accessories

She always appears draped in voluminous robes that hide much of her features including a deep hood that obscures her face in shadows. Her robes are deep blue and trimmed in black. She carries a wooden staff topped with a silver crystal, and she is often surrounded by an aura if twinkling stars.

Personal history

Elmúlás’s past is shrouded in mystery. Her exact origin is unknown, she appeared shortly after the Godswar offering advice to the survivors. One theory is that she is from the future and that is how she knows so much about what is to come. Since her first appearance she has avoided godly politics offering her advice freely to all the gods, good and evil alike.

Her worship started in the early days of the Old Kingdoms when she would appear to individuals offering them cryptic, and sometimes not so cryptic, advice about the future. Soon mortals began calling on her asking for her advice.

When humans travelled to the New Kingdoms they took her worship with them. It spread throughout the New Kingdoms and when people began settling the Frontier Lands they brought her worship there too.

Accomplishments & Achievements

The deity of oracles and prophecy has been instrumental in several major events. It is believed that her prophecies spurred the exploration and eventual colonization of both the New Kingdoms and the Frontier Lands. Her prophecies, cryptic though they are inspired the founding of several of the Frontier Land Kingdoms.

Intellectual Characteristics

Elmúlás is a very taciturn individual, but it is clear she possesses a great deal of knowledge. It is believed to know everything that is to come, however she neither confirms nor denies this. It is clear she possesses great knowledge of what is to come. Her speech reveals a deep intelligence despite her practice of speaking simply and plainly when she speaks. She is a deeply intuitive deity, who’s actions often seem to defy logic, yet usually turn out for the best in the long run.

Morality & Philosophy

Elmúlás doesn’t take sides offering (or refusing) her advice to good an evil alike, in accord with her own inscrutable aims. She supports neither good nor evil, though she avoids harming folks when she can. She prefers to offer her advice in the form of riddles, often ones that make no sense until it is almost too late. Why she does this is uncertain, however she has a philosophy of non-intervention preferring to let others lead their lives without her guidance, and it seems riddles allow her to maintain her cloak of non-interference while still subtly steering larger events.

It is not known exactly what her goals are. She seems to have something that guides her actions causing her to aid one person and refuse aid to another. What this might be is unknown as she has never revealed what it might be. The most popular theory is that she has seen or even witnessed a terrible catastrophe sometime in the future and works subtly to prevent it. When questioned directly about this she always gives a cryptic response that answers nothing.

Naturally she is quite good at foretelling the future and relating this information in the form of riddles. What else she might be proficient at is not known as she is not known to engage in any hobbies or leisurely activities. She is not a very sociable person and is not good at making friends.

Contacts & Relations

She is on good terms with both Mudutu and Arammu. Otherwise she is neither friend nor foe to other deities, staying out of divine politics and intrigue instead concentrating on her own inscrutable ends.

That’s not to say that other deities don’t have strong feelings regarding her. Asbu has a grudge against her, the exact source is unknown. Voimakas dislikes her and disdains her. On the other hand Asmodeus is friendly to her and has granted her safe passage through thee Nine Hells. Similarly Utu values her insight and welcomes her in the Seven Heavens.

All that said she is liked by most deities who value her advice.

She is taciturn and comes across as standoffish she is not very good at making friends, and her practice of couching her advice in the form of riddles and allusions doesn’t win her many close confidants. She is very confident, and this comes across when she does speak, speaking with authority even to beings such as Asmodeus and Utu.
