Traveller Species in Arcverse | World Anvil

Traveller

One of the first known sophont species to arise after the post-war Silent Eon were the ancestors of a race now known only as the Travellers, beginning to show signs of civilization an estimated 4.6 billion cycs ago. Their homeworld has long been lost, but it is presumed to have been located in a distant galaxy somewhere in the direction of the Aevym galaxy. According to the fragments of their history the Travellers have divulged to Federation scholars, their ancestors were rather slow to ascend to multiplanetary and interstellar travel, and never quite solved the problem of FTL travel. However, instead of simply developing stasis for interstellar travel, or even making generation ships, they themselves became the starships; self-contained living systems slowly plying their way through the universe over hundreds of millions of years at large fractions of light speed. The immortal, ever-wandering Travellers do not perceive reality on biological timescales anymore: they have infinite life and infinite patience, enough to watch cosmic events unfold.   Travellers appear to be massive, finely-sculpted, cigar-shaped hulls of tungsten carbide and silicate, with enormous organic ion engines at the rear and vast pylons supporting instruments of unknown nature -perhaps solar cells, refueling booms, or communications arrays. They are rarely seen by the inhabitants of the modern galaxy, and very little is known about them. The ancient spacefarers are estimated to have arrived in the Orranysis galactic neighborhood roughly one hundred million cycs ago, and have been quietly roaming and observing the galaxy ever since. It is theorized that they are somehow responsible for the oddity that is Ska'ama and its inhabitants, though given their commitment to non-intervention this seems unlikely. The Travellers have nothing resembling a unifying government, or even factions; though they as a whole appear to have some sort of diplomatic relations with the Arcadian Order. They possess no ulterior motives or agenda; content to simply observe the grand machinations of the universe in pensive silence.
