The Magocratic Council
After the Magi Revolution, Haven underwent a drastic government change. The representative democracy comprised of civilians in their sunset years in favor of a council of mages born from the rebel mages court. This council has been standing in Haven since the year of 1805 and continues ruling Haven to the modern era.
Not every mage is part of The Council, but every member of the Council is a mage.Those of its ranks are all mages that wish to contribute their magic to the city. While there is no law stating that mages must join, those that show exemplary skill in magic casting or magical knowledge face more pressure to join than others and often cave into the pressure due to growing stigma amongst peers.
Structure
The Council is comprised of many members, but very few will find themselves in seats of power.
Regent:
The leader of Haven. They are the end all, be all for many legislative and administrative positions. By many outside nations, they are considered a monarch. They are the face of Haven and the strongest mage among them.
Viscount:
Normally a title for nobility or to signify a role in government, the title of Viscount carries a different definition in Haven. The Viscount is the leader of the spy network in Haven which serves a more covert function of policing Haven and defending Haven. Of the three, the Viscount is known to be the one scary to go against as not even friendship will stop them from vanquishing a threat to Haven.
Commander:
The leader of Haven's military arm, The Wardens, as well as reviewing the combat training in the Arcane Academy. While many view the position as mundane, or ceremonial, Commanders are involved directly in matters and deal with many powerful threats to Haven both magical and not. The Commander is the second strongest of the three ruling seats, second to the Regent.
The Ruling seats are non-hereditary. The current seat chooses a successor to train them in the role. If a member of the ruling seat should abdicate the seat, or die, before choosing a successor, then a tournament is held between the Mavens for a successor to fill that seat.
History
Formed from the rebel mages during the Magi Revolution, The Magocratic Council served as the leading group for the rebel mages under the leadership of Lilibeth.
The Council served as liaison for the rebels as well as managing the operations of the Sorcerer's Sanctum. When the revolution came to a head in the Night of 1806, the rebel mages not only won the battle, but political support. after this, the previous representative democracy was thrown out in favor of The Magocratic Council with Lilibeth serving as Haven's first Regent.
