Deities in Phoenicia

In Phoenicia each town has its own gods these gods are in alignment with the city/town where they are found.

The most well known gods in the region are Baal, Elun, Baalat, Astarte, Reshef, Dagon, Shadrapa, Misor.

Worship varies from community to community. Baal & Elun seldom have temples, but their rights are held in open areas. Others do have temples and shrines. The priests and priestesses are typically drawn from the leaders in each community with much of this laying on the local ruler.   The primary tenets of the pantheon are an ongoing struggle between Baal and the majority of the gods and the brothers Yamm and Mot. The other gods being the bringers of rain and fertility to the land, while Yamm brings chaos and Mot brings decay and drought. So the Phoenicians must exhort Baal and his party to bring good things to them, and appease Yamm and Mott so that they don't bring excess of decay.   This struggle usually plays out during the regular cycle of weather and storms. Baal brings the rains that water the fields and provide food for the people. Mot sends the drying winds that bring the time of decay before Baal again brings the rain. With Yamm it is a bitter personal battle in which happens randomly ending in the death of one of the combatants. When Yamm wins there will be a time of wild disasters, while a victory by Baal leads to a time of peace and prosperity.
