Astarte

Phoenician goddess of Love, Sex, War, and Hunting.  She is the consort of Baal who won her in his first great battle with Yamm.  When Yamm is named King of the gods by Elun, he enslaves them and claims Astarte for his consort.  Baal refuses to accept this and eventually meets the powerful Yamm in combat where with the aid of two magical clubs he is able to defeat him, and claim both the Kingship and Astarte as his consort.

Her role is to promote the chase in both human relationships and the hunt.  She also promotes the battle between the sexes and mortal warfare.  So lovers seeking their hearts desire look to her for aid.  She is also the focus of warriors looking for success in battle.  Her attentions can be long and deep, or brief and fleeting.  She has a tendency to avoid direct conflict, but is a master of manipulation and works much mischief for her's and her companions entertainment.   Worship for her is done in two manners, in open air venues around great poles where ribbons are wrapped with prayers to her.  The other is in cultic prostitution in which women with exceptional needs go to her temple in the city and await someone willing to pay the price for time with her.  The money from these trysts go the goddess, while the woman hopes to receive the favor they have asked of Astarte.  The woman will place the price of her offering to the goddess when she comes to the temple and cannot leave until the price has been met.
