The Upheaval
The current dating system stems from the end of the Upheaval (EH).
The Shifting of Wamper's Feast
The period that encompasses the Upheaval is commonly dated to five (5) years prior to the final decisive conflict, specifically to the arrival of the inconspicious farming village Wamper's Feast within Arborea (re-dated 5 Pre-Sever (PS)). While smaller compounds had been Shifted to Arborea previously-most notably Owena Manor and the tiny hamlet Entler's Rest-the arrival of the small farming community marked the success of the Shadowfae's ability to operate a controlled planar phasing, the key to opening a permanent gateway to the Shadowfell.
Ironically, the arrival of Wamper's Feast would also herald the arrival of the First Cohort, an infamous trio that would play a pivotal role in halting the Shadowfey's ultimate goal. The First Cohort, two of whom would later be named as Heroes of the Upheaval, would cross the length and breadth of Arborea seeking a way to return their village and themselves to their original realm. While ultimately unsuccessful, their involvement and connections to the three major political powers of Arborea shaped the final conflict.
Not a blade of grass untouched
The five year period of the Upheaval affected most, if not all, of the Wild Realm. Songsells often speak of the Upheaval as Arborea's loss of innocence as the unstructured and free realm became subject to political organization and civilization (said with all the derision of a resigned Arborean satyr). X'ankris Ni-Celenist's famous maxim that the war left 'not a blade of grass untouched' rings true-the Court of Eyes schemes seemed to encompass all manner of discord to unsettle the realm and distract from their ultimate goal of sacrificing the realm to the Shadowfell.
Thus, the following events are a skerrit of the true scope of strife The Court of Eyes orchestrated, but nevertheless retain the distinction of being notable events within the epochal Upheaval:
- The Corruption of the Ghaele
- The Sacrifice of Urliant
- The Five Heads of the Court of Eye
- The Owena Resistance
- He Who Speaks to the Dragons
- The Harrowing of La'had
- The Crack in the World

"Contrary to popular belief, I never coined term 'Shifted' and I'll be the first to admit I remain irked by the calamitous affect this persistent rumour has on my ongoing attempts to champion the lyrical replacement 'unwilling planar transference'. Nevertheless, I contend the phenomonen remains greatly unstudied given the sizeable impact of the magical conjuration upon our collective history. As far as I'm aware, five Shifted locations remain intact within Arborea, begging for magical study. Clearly, the Eldritch Spin is lost to scholarly pursuits and my urging to open the former seat of Owena power, Owena Manor, continues to fall on deaf ears (ironic, given the size of those elven appendages). I refuse to believe Entler's Rest is 'over-run with dwarf-kin' and as for Wamper's itself, I'm sure a visit home would do your complexion the world of good." - X'ankris Ni-Celenist to La'had, letter dated 15th Wealsun Year Three (EH), never delivered
I absolutely love the sass in that letter. It put some spin and amusement in this - and it just makes me want to read more things that X'andris Ni-Celenist has penned. He's my kinda dude. He gets it. unwilling planar transference? Obv best choice. It is definitely an interesting planar conflict - a shame their initial efforts were unsuccessful - but you can't win them all. It's sort of neat how this conflict essentially expanded all manner of trouble there, that it wasn't just 'a fight' but a whole thing about the plane being sacrificed. Sad for the area, neat as a concept.
