Corrupted Fae
An ill fate
Of all the creatures, beasts and people of Arborea, none arguable fared worse than the Corrupted fae during the Upheaval. Corrupted fae describes those fae who were irrevocably changed by the Court of Eyes to meet the needs of the Shadowfey. Through arcane and divine rituals, various fae were altered-mentally, physically and spiritually-through Shadowfell magic. Because of their deep connection to Arborea, these rituals altered the fabric and essence of their beings, rendering them rift from Arborean life spirit and permanently fueling them with shadow-filled despair and spite.Willing and unwilling adherents
The Corrupted consist of those who were willing participants - such as many members of the Ghaele - and those who were captured and forced into Corruption - the most notable being the Elder Tree Himself, Urliant the Great Shelter. Initially, there was no difference between the two, both serving the fanatical Court of Eyes and their corrupt queen Lolastre. Physically, both were scarred with deep arcanic symbols that wept with a blood-tinged sap. Since the Upheaval however, many Corrupted have submitted to rehabilitation, with the marks of their unwilling servitude fading. Still, they are marked mentally, both with the scars of their forced servitude and a deep anger that marked the Corrupted.A life together, a life apart
Many Corrupted reside with the various cities and towns dotted throughout the so-called fringes of Arborea. They make their life as best they can, many inured to the jibes and taunts by the less-tolerant. Some work actively to re-pay their perceived debts, including those within the Courtlands seeking to restore the Court of Eyes to a respectable community. Others are found within the thriving underground markets that cities inevitably acquire. Other still act as guards or mercernaries for those who travel the Arborean Wilds or within the Roads Unkept, unable to stay still, or confined within city walls, for too long. All lament, in their own way, for the deeper corruption they battle, the loss of their true selves, taken by ambitious, power-hungry thugs. Away from the cities and trappings of newly wrought civilization, the true Corrupted walk Arborea. Whether willing or unwilling, these Corrupted revel or have succumbed to their new selves, servants of destruction and hate. Any resemblance to their former fae is coincidental, these Corrupted seek all the vibrant life-kinds of Arborea and enjoy nothing more than crushing their spirit. Many Wild Corrupted have evolved to literally feed from the denizens of Aborea and, in their own way, continue the desolation and despair of their parent shadow realm.t
