The Davey Lamps

The Davey Lamps are the sole reason there is any iron, copper, steel, gold or silver in the city. They are the miners plumbing the depths underneath The Garden Wall for it's treasures and these do not come easily. In addition to this it is rumored that for the right amount of coin to the right people they can remove any problem people you might have within Arbor's Walls.

"The mines are deep and dark, good place to hide, good place for things or people to be hidden..." Wenret Goldfoot

Public Agenda:

The Davey Lamps exist to bring rock and ore out of the mines and provide it to The Iron Hands for processing, in addition to this they maintain the parts of the tracks that drop off their workers into the mines, ensuring that the stations are well kept clean and not an eyesore for the nobles and well to do that might have to travel through those stations on the way to other parts of the city.

History:

The Davey Lamps used to be part of The Iron Hands in fact they were one company or more accurately a single family the Goldfoot family, that ran the entire end to end operation of extracting ore from the Garden Wall refining it casting it into ingots or whatever shape might be required and selling it on to various other companies who need it for their production. This arrangement had been in place for as long as anyone can remember and the thought was that it would continue like this forever.   This changed 34 years ago when Roseni Goldfoot the heir to the family gave birth to twins, Wenret Goldfoot and a Wila Goldfoot. As two children now stood to inherit everything the only thing that was fair, at least in Roseni's mind was to split the business into the mines and refineries. You would have thought that being brother and sister might have let the two work closely together but by the time of their inheritance though the two were not on speaking terms. The day their mother died and passed the reins to them was the last day the two ever saw each other. It is a great secret what divided the Goldfoots with many rumors of a lost love, a business deal gone south or a treasured family member meeting an untimely end at the hands of the other. Whatever happened though spurred a deep hatred between the two and the only thing that keeps the ore flowing is the knowledge that the lives the two are accustomed to would suddenly stop if either interfered too much with the other.

Additional Source of Income:

With the right contacts or enough money the Davey Lamps provide an additional service for those willing to cough up their fee, as they call it problem removal. Because of their unique magics relating to their time in the mines, The Davey Lamps can get almost anywhere and get to anyone. So many come to them seeking help with troublesome union leaders, business rivals or ex lovers. The Davey Lamps care not the reason just that you have the coin to pay them, they then make these problem disappear much like they do pulling their victims into the rock never to be seen again.   It should be noted that Wenret Goldfoot himself denies that the Davey Lamps are doing any of this officially that they are strictly miners and any individual employee caught doing such a heinous act will of course be brought to the authorities. The trouble is with no bodies and no proof it's very difficult to pin this on any individual and the only evidence is little more than stories told at night to scare children, hands reaching out of the rock to pull them into the dark.

Attire / Common Garb / Quirks:

The one piece of garb that all the Davey Lamps have is of course their Davey Lamps it is affixed to their belts at all time in the mines as it is pitch black and provides one of the only light sources should you be moving from dig site to dig site. Beyond this though Each of the Davey Lamps is afforded a great deal of flexibility with their attire though Wenret does insist his people take care to protect themselves from the harsh realities of working in this dark place, as such most wear coveralls under which are long trousers and a simple shirt.   A final peculiarity that only shows up in those who have been underground for a long time is a silvering of the hair. The reasons for this are very difficult to understand but some theorize that the proximity to the The Great Tree's roots which run all over the mines has some effect over long periods. Regardless of the reason though there are no other noticeable effects that are made public.

Written Description:

Covered from head to toe in filth emerging out of the darkness is a person who is used to hard labour. Coveralls wrap this person from head to toe and they are the furthest from clean they could be, covered in dirt and dust of all colours. At their hip is a long pickaxe blunted from wear and overuse, and on their head atop a mess of silvery hair is a helmet with a light on the front.

Structure and Hierarchy:

There is not so much a Hierarchy within the Davey Lamps but there are clear roles within the company that helps define what you might be doing in the dark of the mines.

Surveyor:

Responsible for finding new veins of ore to excavate, these brave souls explore and create new tunnels. This is done with powerful earth magics that allow one to step into the rock wall itself. However these magics are not known for being very accurate on timing especially in close proximity to tree roots. In addition to this danger it is extremely difficult to see while submerged in the stone so getting lost and not being able to find your way out are very real dangers. If this happens the Surveyor has to pray for the best outcome and they are simply shunted out into a part of the mine where someone will find their unconscious if battered form, In the worst case they will become entombed in the rock and die immediately. There have been stories of people ending up inside the lake or in one unfortunate case in one of the train tunnels only to be struck moments later by the 8:15 to the Second Ring.

Digger:

This one is pretty self explanatory, they dig moving and clearing rock that the Surveyors have told them hides the veins they are looking for. The pickaxes they carry are just for show and defending themselves though and in reality most use a series of complex earth based magics to shift and move rock out of the way.

Lookout:

The mines are a dangerous place and there are things that lurk in the darkest parts, the lookouts job is to keep their eyes and ears open for anything that might want to make a snack out of a lone miner.

Notable People:

Wenret Goldfoot (Head and Owner of the Davey Lamps)
Jack Smith (general shit who got in way over his head)

Territory:

The mines anything and everything within it is under their control. So if we were counting total landmass instead of most employees the Davey Lamps would have the largest territory, that it never sees the light of day or night is neither here nor there.

Notable Structures:

The Abyss (The pub in the Second Ring that most of the miners use before or after their shift)
The Dark Below (location inside the mines that used to be the midpoint now a small town if you can call it that used exclusively by the Davey Lamps)
