Davey Lamp

On almost every belt that goes into the mine you'll find one of these indispensable items, some have dents so big you're sure the person who was wearing it at the time is no longer among the living. Still to go into the dark without one is suicide and replacements are expensive so hand me downs and dead mans goods are common just make sure it's working before you clip it to your belt
He picked up the fallen lamp off the ground wiped off the dust and handed it to me "There now you've got one, so stop whining". The handle was still warm but we didn't stop for long and we continued walking by where the tunnel had collapsed. -Apprentice Davey Lamp on their first day

Appearance

It's a portable, hand-held oil lamp, typically used for mining and underground work. It's made of brass and copper, with an intricate filigree design covering the exterior. The lamp itself is a small glass globe, which houses the flame. The globe is protected by a metal cage, which also serves as a handle for carrying the lamp. The lamp is filled with oil, which is lit to provide light.   The wick is adjusted with a small knob on the top of the lamp, and it can be turned up or down to control the size of the flame. The lamp is powered by a small steam engine, which is located at the base of the lamp. The engine is fueled by a small amount of coal, which is placed in a compartment at the bottom of the lamp. The engine powers a small fan, which is used to circulate air around the flame, keeping it burning bright and steady.   The lamp has a small gauge on the side, which shows the level of oil and coal. It also has a small lever, which is used to turn the lamp on and off. The lamp also has a small valve, which is used to release any excess steam from the engine, keeping it running smoothly.

History

In much of the lifespan of the mines coal was the main extracted element from The Garden Wall however anyone who knows anything knows that coal and it's dust is highly flammable and even with the mining techniques employed by the Company which was the The Iron Hands at the time open flames were still dangerous and likely to result in full uncontrolled mine fires.   Eventually the problem was solved with the invention of the Davey Lamp a small portable Lamp with a non exposed flame with a small motor for the intake of air at the bottom.
