From its lofty ramparts, guards keep watchful eyes on the teeming streets below, ever alert for signs of trouble amidst the throngs of merchants, travelers, and townsfolk.   Within the citadel's walls, the air is alive with the hum of activity as soldiers train in the courtyard, craftsmen ply their trade in the workshops, and scholars pore over dusty tomes in the libraries. The Great Hall serves as the hub of the city's political and social life, a grand chamber adorned with the banners of noble houses and the sigil of the Frostborne dynasty, where rulers hold court and issue decrees that shape the destiny of Harrowfrost.   Surrounding the citadel, the city sprawls outwards in a maze of narrow alleys and winding streets, its buildings huddled together for warmth against the biting cold. Purpose / Function

The Citadel of Eldric stands as a bulwark against the harsh elements and myriad threats that besiege the city of Harrowfrost. Constructed centuries ago by Thane Eldric Frostborne, its primary purpose is to serve as a stronghold of defense and governance, protecting the denizens of Harrowfrost from the dangers of the frozen wilderness. Within its formidable walls, the ruling Frostborne dynasty commands the city's affairs, guiding its destiny with a firm hand. Additionally, the Citadel houses the city's archives, safeguarding centuries of knowledge and lore against the ravages of time. As the seat of power in Harrowfrost, the Citadel of Eldric symbolizes the resilience and determination of its people, standing as a beacon of hope amidst the desolation of the northern wastes.

Alterations

Over the centuries, the Citadel of Eldric has undergone several alterations and expansions to adapt to the evolving needs and challenges faced by the city of Harrowfrost. Initially constructed as a formidable fortress by Thane Eldric Frostborne, subsequent rulers and architects have made the following alterations:   Fortifications Reinforced: The outer walls of the citadel have been reinforced with additional layers of stone and fortified with defensive battlements to withstand sieges and assaults from external threats. Expansion of Living Quarters: As the population of Harrowfrost grew, additional living quarters and barracks were constructed within the citadel to accommodate the city's defenders and administrative staff. Enhanced Defensive Measures: Defensive mechanisms such as arrow slits, murder holes, and hidden passages have been added to bolster the citadel's defenses and deter potential invaders. Construction of the Great Hall: A grand hall was constructed within the citadel to serve as the seat of power for the Frostborne dynasty, where rulers hold court and conduct official business. Creation of Archives and Libraries: Extensive archives and libraries were established within the citadel to preserve the city's history, knowledge, and arcane lore, safeguarding them against the ravages of time and conflict. Modernization of Infrastructure: Over time, the citadel's infrastructure has been modernized and upgraded with amenities such as Geothermal heat from natural hot springs of Warcaller Hills was harnessed and directed through a network of subterranean ducts to the Citadel.

Architecture

As you approach the Citadel of Eldric, a towering structure of dark stone rises before you, its imposing silhouette casting a long shadow over the snow-covered landscape. Massive gates of iron and oak stand sentinel at the entrance, flanked by stone guardians carved in the likeness of ancient warriors. The corridors and chambers of the citadel are adorned with intricate carvings and decorative motifs, depicting scenes of triumph and tragedy from the city's storied history. Vaulted ceilings soar overhead, supported by massive columns of polished granite, their surfaces etched with runes of protection and warding.   The Great Hall stands as the heart of the citadel, a vast chamber bathed in the flickering glow of torches and hearthfires. High above, stained glass windows filter the wan light of the northern sun, casting kaleidoscopic patterns across the polished marble floors below. At one end of the hall, a raised dais serves as the throne of the Frostborne rulers, flanked by banners bearing the sigil of the dynasty and the emblems of Harrowfrost's noble houses.   Throughout the citadel, chambers are adorned with fine tapestries and intricate mosaics, depicting scenes of heroism and valor from the city's past. Ornate chandeliers hang from the ceilings, their crystal prisms refracting the light into a dazzling display of color and shadow. Plush rugs and velvet draperies lend an air of opulence to the chambers, their rich textures contrasting with the stark austerity of the fortress walls.   In the depths of the citadel, the archives and libraries house a wealth of knowledge and wisdom, their shelves groaning beneath the weight of ancient tomes and scrolls. Scholars and scribes labor tirelessly amidst towering stacks of books, their quills scratching out the annals of history and unraveling the mysteries of the arcane.   Above it all, the towers of the citadel rise defiantly against the winter sky, their spires reaching ever upwards towards the heavens. From their lofty heights, watchmen keep vigil over the city below, scanning the horizon for signs of danger amidst the swirling snow and ice. Within the Citadel of Eldric, the echoes of the past reverberate with every step, a living testament to the indomitable spirit of Harrowfrost and its people.

Defenses

The Citadel of Eldric stands as an impregnable fortress, its defenses meticulously crafted to withstand the harshest of assaults and repel any would-be invaders. From its towering battlements to its labyrinthine corridors, every aspect of the citadel has been designed with the utmost consideration for security and protection.  

1. Stout Walls and Ramparts:

The outer walls of the Citadel of Eldric are constructed from thick layers of dark stone, reinforced with iron braces and mortar to withstand the onslaught of battering rams and siege engines. Turrets and watchtowers dot the perimeter, providing vantage points for archers and guards to rain down death upon approaching foes.  

2. Impenetrable Gates:

The main entrance to the citadel is guarded by massive gates of iron and oak, reinforced with steel bands and arcane wards to repel unauthorized intruders. Portcullises of wrought iron can be lowered in times of crisis, sealing off the citadel from the outside world and denying entry to any who would dare to breach its defenses.  

3. Defensive Emplacements:

Along the walls of the citadel, arrow slits and murder holes have been strategically placed to allow defenders to rain down arrows, boiling oil, and other projectiles upon attackers below. Ballistae and catapults are stationed at key points along the ramparts, ready to unleash devastation upon any enemy foolish enough to approach.  

4. Hidden Traps and Snares:

Within the citadel's corridors and chambers, hidden traps and snares lie in wait to ensnare unwary intruders. Pressure plates trigger concealed pitfalls and collapsing floors, while tripwires activate swinging blades and dart traps. Only those with knowledge of the citadel's secrets can hope to navigate its treacherous depths unscathed.  

5. Magical Wards and Enchantments:

Skilled enchanters and wizards have imbued the citadel with powerful magical wards and enchantments to protect it from supernatural threats and malevolent forces. Arcane barriers repel teleportation and scrying, while glyphs of warding unleash deadly spells upon trespassers who dare to breach the citadel's sanctity.  

6. Vigilant Guards and Sentinels:

The citadel is manned by a dedicated cadre of guards and sentinels, sworn to defend it with their lives against all who would seek to do harm. Clad in suits of gleaming armor and armed with razor-sharp weapons, these stalwart defenders stand ever vigilant, ready to repel any incursion with unwavering resolve.   Together, these defenses combine to make the Citadel of Eldric an impregnable bastion of strength and security, ensuring that the city of Harrowfrost remains safe from harm even in the face of the most dire threats.

History

The Citadel of Eldric stands as a testament to the legacy of Thane Eldric Frostborne, the revered founder of Harrowfrost. It was he who first raised the fortress from the frozen earth, forging it as a bastion of strength against the harsh wilderness of Shadowmarch.   Legend speaks of Thane Eldric's pact with the ancient spirits of the north, who granted him the knowledge and power to tame the elements and carve out a kingdom amidst the icy wastes. It is said that the very stones of the citadel are infused with the magic of these primordial beings, lending strength and resilience to its walls.   Throughout the ages, the Citadel of Eldric has served as the seat of power for the Frostborne dynasty, rulers of Harrowfrost. From its hallowed halls, the Frostbornes have guided the destiny of the city, navigating the treacherous currents of politics and intrigue that swirl within its walls.   Yet, as the winter storms grow fiercer and the shadows deepen, whispers abound of a darker legacy that lies buried beneath the citadel's foundations. Tales of forbidden rites and ancient sorceries, whispered only in hushed tones, hint at a truth more sinister than any mortal can fathom.
