House Buran

Continuing our conversation about The Haft and its people, I recalled Buck's mention of House Buran, and how they didn't shy away from the deep woods of the Reach. That had piqued my curiosity, and I wanted to know more about them. Buck, as always, was happy to entertain my questions.   "House Buran," he began, "is a minor house, a vassal of a vassal, being sworn to House Aradin , who are sworn to House Morym, who are sworn t' the Crown."   "The House makes it's home in their small holdins in The 'Aft, near the eaves o' the great, dark woods that sweep through valley between the ranges, in a holdfast they call Highmoon. The House is ruled by Elinora Buran, and she be th' Countess o' Highmoon, but she be rulin' in the stead o' her son Aran Buran 'till he sees fit to take the reigns hisself. Aran, y'see, spends a great deal o' his time in the depths o' the wood, huntin' and spendin' time with the wilder men o' the Reach. Sure it is he'll take up his seat soon enough, but the lad has a deep love of the old lore and 'as learned as much from the Druids as they'll teach one not o' their order. An' this is why his mother be rulin' their lands--there was a chance the lad would have left and taken up with the Men o' the Oak and taken the sickle hisself. I'm sure the lady is relieved he didn't; bein' her only son there'd be no one else to inherit the land and it's duties."   "Now, since 'e was a boy, young Aran and Abeth Aradin been nearly inseperable when they're both about the 'Aft. True, tongues would wag elsewhere, but the folk o' the 'Aft know it best to leave waggin' tongues behind their teeth, as they say. Aran hisself is dour and at times grim enough, but outside o' the wild folk o' the woods, he knows the paths and trails and hidden ways under then dark boughs better than anyone."   "House Buran has been loyal to House Aradin, but I tell ya this in confidence, I be sure that loyalty is to House Aradin, and not up th' chain to House Morym. The boys o' Buran carry too much of the old Clan wildness in their veins t' be kneelin' easily to any save those they choose. And that's no one more than a couple o' leagues from Highmoon."
