Terror of the Deep

Written by Pookas Kreations

The Akaen Dragon Eel is the most dangerous predator in the South Sea. It lives in the Abyss of the deepest trenches between Dracorus and Terenik. They are a mutation of a dragon and an eel and are at the top of the food chain in their chosen environment. There are a few evil Dragons that consider young dragons eels as a delicacy, but this is rare and the good dragons stop it when they can.

Akaens are the terrors of the deep. Solitary except during mating season, females eat the male afterward. Gestation is short and she needs to find a suitable cave to lay her eggs far from her residence. They are not very intelligent but are very cunning creatures. Akaens wyrms are also rumored to roam the shipping lanes and sink any ships they occasionally find, drowning everyone on board. Adolescents often follow behind their elders to eat the bounty left behind.

Once they hatch, they will eat anything that moves. If enough food can't be found they start eating each other if one shows a weakness. They are very territorial and live in hunting packs when young. When young they hunt, not only movement, but blood sends them into a frenzy. Tearing into their prey until there is only a cloud of blood. These are ravenous beasts, constantly searching for prey to eat.

As an adult, their hunting changes to mostly ambush hunting. As they age they sink to the lower levels of the trenches, pick or excavate tunnels and only venture out to hunt in the darkness. When movement is sensed, they lunge out of their hiding place and grab their prey often swallowing it whole. They adapt to the depths the longer they live there. Their eyesight fades the longer they live down below, so they develop echolocation through mechanoreceptors in grooves along the sides of their heads making them extremely sensitive to movement and allowing them to detect any prey in complete darkness.

Many merchants have had the shipping lanes changed because the Akaen has begun to frequent the routes.
