Cinder
Cinder is a natural material that only grows near where elementals live, on the Elemental Plane of Fire, or near gates linking to it. After years of studying cinders, they were discovered to be alive. What most don’t know is that cinders truly are the pupal stage of a cinder butterfly. They can stay in this stage for hundreds of years before they explode out of their shell transformed.

Cultural Significance and Usage
Most dwarves revere them as symbols of transformation and are pets of the God of fire. Overuse of a cinder is a crime, akin to murder. If it is repeated the culprit is put to death or exiled. Whenever one is found they are kept in creches in volcanic tunnels to keep their energy up for when they are needed. Their caretakers are acolytes in the God of Fires’ Temple, the cinders are well tended by them.
Industrial Use
Dwarves often use their energy for fuel in trains and other machines that run on fire. They never kill them, but use some of their energy, then place them back in their fiery home. Some have been used in forges, as long as coal “feeds” them, the heat reaches extreme highs for long periods of time.

It would be cool to have a story in this article that told of how they discovered the cinders were alive! And the reaction of the elementals to them being used and killed before they knew. Lots of drama potential!
