Triton
Triton are a race of aquatic mortals, found on Apa Axas. Amongst the rarest and least encountered of all races on Apa Axas, the Triton are an aquatic race, resembling a mix of Human, Elf and Halfling, while possessing features such as long, seaweed-like hair, webbed hands and feet and dorsal fins. The Triton are a secretive race, preferring the isolation of deep-sea trenches where even the Sea Elves dare not venture. As such, no creature other than the Triton have witnessed one of their cities, although travelling Triton, seldom seen on the surface world, describe them as domed cities with bioluminescent corals as structures.
Many Triton view themselves as protectors, and act as care takers of the sea, aiding its denizens when they can, protecting its waters and unleashing relentless vengeance on those who bring the ocean harm. This penchant for retribution has made the Triton somewhat of a bogeyman amongst the Sea Elf community, who may invoke the ire of the Triton due to territory dispute or miscommunication. This however has led to all-out war between the two races throughout the years, and even in times of peace between the Triton and Sea Elves, the truce is shaky at best.
Civilization and Culture
Culture and Cultural Heritage
Most Triton live within their domed cities, however, a small amount, thought to be less than one percent, choose to venture to the surface world to learn more about their alien cultures. They are a proud people, and are quick to insult, which has led to the Triton having a somewhat negative reputation on Apa Axas. This reception is not helped by the number of Triton who decide to become pirates, due to their natural aquatic abilities, and love of hand to hand combat. However, other Tritons find work as fishermen, adventurers, guardsman, or any other role in which their fish-like adaptations give them an advantage.
History
The origins of the Triton are just as unknown as their society, perhaps even to the Triton themselves, who notably tend to value oral recordings of history than any written records. Tritons consider themselves former Inhabitants of the elemental plane of water, stranded in Apa Axas during one of the Travesty Retch's rampages in the early days. While this school of thought is popular, many others subscribe to the theory that the Triton were once, or were related to, a land-dwelling race known as The Clever Folk, created by Nidryshim and most infamous for enacting the God Severment, then disappearing entirely. This theory stems from the only known picture of a Clever Folk, a tapestry called “Machine’s Folly” by a Triton artist known as Nelges Delknoe. However, he states that he simply based the depiction on a Triton as he had no reference for the Clever Folk. Despite this, the rudimentary magical images that wander ancient Temples dedicated to the presence would become Tratch, said to depict the Clever Folk, bare an uncanny resemblance to the Triton, although these images lack the Triton’s distinctive webbed appendages and fins. However, the Triton vehemently oppose this theory, believing it to be a disgrace to their faith, as they believe they are true and rightful owners of the sea, and to learn they originated from the surface would defy that core belief. Triton often worship Retch and the Gloom Mona, and view Tratch as the ultimate enemy of the Triton, and still more will become Sea Druids, having invented the Circle of the Sea to protect the Oceans for their land-based assailants.
