Aeron (AIR-ron)

The Dragon Continent

Aeron is a landmass in the shape of a dragon's head on the northern hemisphere of Aonaran. This continent is often nicknamed the Dragon Continent not only due to its shape but also because it is the only home to all dragon species on the planet. It has six distinct terrestrial and three aquatic regions that all house their own unique dragon species.

Geography

Aeron's geography is a marvel of diversity, shaped by the draconic themes and the elemental forces that influence the continent.
Beginning on the dragon's nose, there lie the Frozen Horn Mountains. This frozen wasteland is barren and mountainous with the occasional hardy forest dotted about. In the middle of the Frozen Horn Mountains lies the Black Ice Glacier. This hunk of ice holds an unimaginable amount of ice magic, which brought about the region's frigid nature.
In between the Frozen Horn Mountains and the neighbouring region, the Lava Fangs, lies the Frozen Lava Lake. This paradoxical body of water is comprised of freezing cold water covering boiling lava. Scientists speculate that the ice magic from the Black Ice Glacier collided with the lava from the Lava Fangs, which caused the lake to be formed.
East of the Frozen Lava Lake lie the Lava Fangs. This volcanic region is the polar opposite of the Frozen Horn Mountains. The highly active volcanoes of the Lava Fangs drench this region all year round in scalding lava. In the north lie the Sunneva Volcanoes, the three largest and most active volcanoes on the entire planet, only being dwarfed by Mount Sahar. These three also supply the Sunneva River with scorching lava, making it inhabitable to most dragon species.
To the south of the Lava Fangs lies the birthplace of the Sun Dragons, Mount Sahar. This monstrous volcano used to be active during the time the first Sun Dragons came to be but has since died down and become inactive. It now serves as a meeting spot for all dragonkind, since it is accessible by land, water and air. Being the birthplace of the first Sun Dragons, it also holds large significance for them and their descendants.
Moving east of the Lava Fangs over the Sunneva River, there lies the Molar Marshlands. This region is covered in dense mangrove forests and crisscrossed by a multitude of rivers. It is heavily humid and warm all year round. Deep within the marshlands, the ancient Moss Cave lies hidden underneath the canopy.
Surrounding the Molar Marshlands to the north and east is Aeron's largest region, the Parched Throat Desert. This sun-blasted region covers the landbridge that connects Aeron to Morana and meets the Desert of Despair halfway. It is known for its rolling dunes and heavy sandstorms that can be felt on Elentiya, if violent enough. The inhabitants are well adapted to the heat and water scarcity, but there exists a sanctuary for all creatures of the desert. The Oasis Grotto is an enigmatic cave that appears to change location from time to time. It is the only source of water inside the desert.
Bordering on the desert to the south is the birthplace of the Moon Amphitheres, the Isadora River. It is Aeron's largest river, running from the mountain range in the east all the way to the Ravenous Bay in the west. This way it builds a natural border between the Parched Throat Desert in the north and the large forest in the south.

Ecosystem

Aeron's diverse geography gives rise to a rich tapestry of ecosystems, each uniquely adapted to its surroundings and the elemental forces at play. The continent's ecosystems are closely intertwined with the behaviours and life cycles of the dragon species that inhabit them. The ecosystems are not isolated; they interact and overlap, influencing each other's dynamics and creating a complex web of life on Aeron. The dragon species play a vital role in shaping these ecosystems, their behaviours influencing the distribution of resources, predation patterns, and even the elemental forces within each region. The balance between these biological and environmental factors creates the intricate and ever-evolving ecosystems of Aeron.

Ecosystem Cycles

The changing seasons on Aeron have a profound impact on its ecosystems, influencing the behaviours, life cycles, and interactions of the organisms that inhabit each region. Throughout these seasons, migration patterns might emerge, with creatures moving between regions to take advantage of favourable conditions. Adaptations such as hibernation, altered hunting behaviours, and synchronized mating seasons allow the organisms to navigate the challenges and opportunities presented by Aeron's unique climate and seasonal cycle.

Rain Season
The Rain Season brings relief to arid regions like the Parched Throat Desert, where water becomes more abundant. Desert creatures like Dune Wyrms and Sandcorn Dragonets become more active, seeking out water sources and replenishing their reserves. In the Ravenous Bay, the Rain Season can lead to an increase in plankton and nutrient availability, attracting larger predators like Water Amphitheres and Coral Wyrms.

Leaf Season
As the Leaf Season arrives, the Lower Jaw Forest experiences a gradual shedding of leaves, signalling a shift in its ecosystem. Timber Dragons and Leaf Dragonets adapt to the changing vegetation, modifying their diets to suit the available food sources. In the Frozen Horn Mountains, snowfall becomes more frequent, causing some creatures to retreat to sheltered areas while others, like Frost Wyrms, become more active in the cold.

Frost Season
The Frost Season triggers hibernation for many creatures, including those in the Frozen Horn Mountains and the Lower Jaw Forest. Animals like Earth Wyrms and Snowflake Dragonets enter a state of dormancy, conserving energy until the arrival of warmer temperatures. In the Lava Fangs, some volcanic activity might decrease during this time, influencing the availability of resources for Fire Dragons and Lava Drakes.

Bloom Season
With the arrival of the Bloom Season, the regions of Aeron burst with life as plants begin to sprout and bloom. This triggers the mating season for Aeron's creatures as they take advantage of the abundant food and shelter. In the Frozen Horn Mountains, the Black Ice Glacier might experience increased melting, providing water sources for the creatures migrating to the area.

Sun Season
The Sun Season is a time of abundance across Aeron's ecosystems. In the Lava Fangs, Fire Dragons and Lava Drakes thrive as the volcanic activity increases, providing a wealth of resources. In the Frozen Horn Mountains, Snow Wyverns and other creatures enjoy relatively warmer temperatures. The Ravenous Bay experiences heightened activity during the Sun Season, as an abundance of marine life attracts apex predators like Ocean Amphitheres and Coral Wyrms.

History

Aeron's history began long before the first humans on Elentiya.
The first dragons to walk on Aonaran's soil emerged from the dying breaths of Althea and Serkan, the two stars that collided to make Mirae, the current sun of Aonaran. These breaths reached the planet as solar flares and struck down in two different locations. The larger one came down near the Isadora River onto two snakes, transforming them into the first Moon Amphitheres. The smaller one struck down on Mount Sahar onto a group of four lizards that then transformed into the first Sun Dragons. From these first six dragons evolved all the other species of dragons that live on Aeron today, either by themselves, in conflict or through magic interference.
The other species of animals on Aeron evolved alongside the dragons and in their respective regions to fit the demanding life and ensure their future.

Tourism

The only people brave, or mad, enough to visit Aeron, are scientists, studying the fauna and flora of the Dragon Continent. Rarely any other humanoid will set foot on Aeron thanks to the dragons.
Due to the strong snowstorms of the Frozen Horn Mountains and the storms created by the Sky Amphitheres of the Forgotten Fang Mountains, flying to Aeron is not an option. The only way to reach Aeron is by ship.
If you get past the hungry mouths of the Hydras at the entrance to the Ravenous Bay, you will usually be met with calm seas for the rest of the trip, unless the Ocean or Water Amphitheres are in a foul mood.
Docking at the Lava Fangs is not an option, as the boat will probably catch fire before even reaching the shore. The only viable options for landing ashore are the Lower Jaw Forest or the Molar Marshlands.
As there are no human settlements on Aeron, you will have to bring your own accommodation as well as provisions for most of your stay, if you don't want to get eaten. If the dragons of the Lower Jaw Forest catch you hunting for sport instead of food, they will attack relentlessly, especially the Glow Dragonets.
