Personal history

Nobody's bothered to ask about Kraius' upbringing or background. The moment he got to Ioth Academy, he worked hard to assimilated, adopting the behaviors and mannerisms of a learned scholar and forsaking any affectations of his culture of origin.   Kraius was supposed to be assigned to the Grove, but thanks to the machinations of Athalor his spot was taken by Alyxander and he ended up at the Great Hall. It took him time to make friends, and he attracted children who were insecure about their lack of knowledge and eager to share in his voracious appetite for information. Soon he had a small, loyal circle of friends and hangers on.   Everything changed for Kraius halfway through his first year, when Athalor, Alyxander and Garnet were reassigned to the Great Hall. A tumultuous rivalry began. From dueling in Broxwerth Hall and getting waterboarded to a disastrous promposal in his Fourth Year to the founding of the Codex, Kraius has been an enemy, a rival, and a begrudging ally. The formation of the Codex gave him a newfound outlet for his zeal and social frustration.

Disturbing Conclusions
6862

If my calculations are correct--and unless Athalor deliberately sabotaged me I know they're correct--something is seriously wrong with Ioth Academy. This is not a new development, it's a process that must have been going on for years. I haven't shared my concerns with anyone but Garnet yet...but this may the exact task the Codex is suited for.   To put it in terms anyone could understand, the academy is built on a naturally occurring reserve of Dawn Energy stabilized and expanded by Ioth and his companions and anchored by the Spire to create a cohesive zone in which ambient arcane pulses facilitate the continued endurance of normally fleeting spell matrices. The lodges, the ring, the planar metageometric properties of the space within the sphere, the defensive and climate changes enacted by the sphere itself are all the result of stable Dawn Magic. That magic should be rotating in concentric fields, some clockwise, some counterclockwise, around the spire as part of the stable pattern.   What I've found is that there's a negative force, a vacuum or friction of some kind, impeding that rotation, drawing Dawn Energy back into itself. This drainage accounts for the semipermeable barriers between the extraplanar space denoted by the Sphere and the Otherworld, thereby causing the fey incursions that have plagued the school since at least I began attendance.   The problem is, I can't think of who would be capable of this. It could be a flaw of some kind...but I'm sure Ioth wouldn't leave a flaw and would notice it immediately?   Could something have happened to the progenitor of all magic? There's no way he's actually behind this.   If the Codex is to preserve the legacy of Ioth and his companions and the magical traditions of the Alfar, solving this crisis is our most important purpose. It's what's going to set us apart in history as the Best of the Best.

Fourth Year Project
6861

Obsessed as he is with the past and the legacy of Ioth, Kraius decided to turn his attentions to the recent fey incursions. After all, the Golden Sphere is supposed to keep non-students and non-faculty out, and yet over the last few years more and more fey have slipped into the Academy.   First, Kraius spent a protracted period in the library, going over sources and comparing measurements in the metageometric fields of the academy's planar integrity over the years and charting any noted changes (he found to his distaste that terribly poor records had been kept). Then, he built an apparatus of golden wire with an accompanying tuning fork and started taking measurements throughout the school, comparing the readings. He didn't get very far, but accepted Athalor's help in taking some surreptitious readings in places Kraius wouldn't normally be caught dead.   Finally, after collecting the data, Kraius did some late nights processing the numbers and arraying them geographically and temporally. His conclusion: There is no deliberate Fey incursion. The weak points are rotating along with the sphere itself and they intensify closer to the inside of the sphere. No external force is attempting to push in, something is disrupting the sphere's planar integrity and making it susceptible to curious or malevolent individual fey.

Kraius' First Year
6858

It was a rough opening for young Kraius. When he arrived at Ioth Academy he deliberately discarded everything from his prior life. A student at the greatest institute of magical learning in the four kingdoms is all he wanted to be--not anybody else.   He was SO EXCITED to see Ioth at the opening ceremony. All his life he'd heard stories of the great archmage, his companions, the glory of a world long since lost and the awesome power of magic. He got a little bit upset when some of the other children were being disrespectful, and it was the worst possible time for his asthma to act up. That's how he got his unfortunate nickname, "Squeaky," and developed a dislike for that tall smug Alfar boy. Kraius thought that a Dawn Elf ought to be more reverent!   Things got even more confusing because he was supposed to be assigned to the Grove, but something went wrong with his paperwork? There were too many students on the list? All he knows is he was settling in and meeting people and then suddenly he was sitting on a staircase waiting for the caretakers to figure out his fate, only to get completely redirected to the Great Hall.   Honestly? That worked out for him. The idea of living under the open sky in a beautiful forest was intriguing, but the Great Hall had much more pomp, much more grandeur, a place fitting for the telling of somber and meaningful stories. Kraius threw himself into his work even at the young age of 10. He knew lots of things, and while that made him the butt of jokes among some students, there were others eager to hear his stories and interesting facts. He developed a small circle of friends who believed him when he acted important. Overall, things were looking up for him--until halfway through the year.   Athalor and company got transferred to the Great Hall. It'd been six months, and Kraius hoped that perhaps they'd learned some decorum by now.   They, unfortunately, had not.

First Year Summary

  * Academic: Very strong *Social: Decent   * Craft: Basket weaving * Capstone: A lovely basket with a depiction of ioth on it.
