Giant Species in Amanor | World Anvil

Giant

We are great killers. Bonecrushers. Manspitters! SKULLSMASHERS! We walk on the corpses of little men!
— Hill giant Esthemus on the nature of his kin
Giants are a towering species of humanoids that can be met across the Universe. They are divided into elemental-imbued subspecies and non-magical, common giants.   Contents

Subspecies

Common giants

Common giants, also known by various other names such as hill giants and mountain giants, are creatures of a mundane nature, extremely big and strong, of course, but lacking any apparent magical abilities. They populate the entire world of Amanor, but their numbers are few and they prefer to dwell as far away from other mortal civilizations as possible. Common giants are encountered also on numerous worlds of the wide Universe.

Fire giant

Fire giants , or muspeljar, are stout but broad giants with spirits as unruly as their element of fire.   In mythic history, fire giants were the appointed guardians of Muspelheim, but were always chaotic and wild when compared to other giants. Indeed, they acted as the instigators of the Giant Rebellions in Ragnarok. Even though their revolts were mainly disastrous for them and other giant peoples besides, they have nowadays separated themselves from the Empyreal Gods. Thanks to their chaotic and warlike natures, fire giants have not managed to unify into a single force following the death of their god Surtur.

Frost giant

Frost giants, or ymirjar, are medium-sized giants with aggressive and grudge-bearing natures. Whereas fire giants are temperamental and chaotic, frost giants are grim and contemplative creatures that harbor only the darkest of desires.   Frost giants were assigned by the Empyreal Gods to oversee the plane of Niflheim, but they were among the most eager revolutionaries during the Giant Rebellions that occurred in Ragnarok. Admittedly, the hearts and minds of frost giants were irreversibly turned against the Empyreal Gods long before Ragnarok during the war known as Fimbulwinter, when the Empyreals killed their god Laufi for treachery and chose no successor for the God of Frost. Ymir – the disgruntled son of Laufi – swore eternal vengeance on the Empyreals. Ymir remains alive and well even now, tens of thousands of years after, and continues to plot the demise of the Empyreals.

Stone giant

Stone giants, or jötnar, are slow-moving and slow-thinking creatures, and among the largest of their kind – second only to storm giants. They are known as neutral-aligned creatures, immovable in arguments and irreconcilable in grievances.   Stone giants are the masters of Jotunheim. They rebelled against the Empyreals during Ragnarok -- this might have been caused by the power vacuum created by the death of their god Karcheus, who was killed by the great serpent Jormundgandr. Morad the Earthmother, daughter of Karcheus, managed to make peace with the Empyreals and unite the stone giants under her rule, and she was made one of the Twelve Sovereigns. Since then, the stone giants have rebelled against Morad and detached themselves from the Empyreals, desiring to remain neutral. Morad remains the Goddess of Earth, but stone giants seem content with remaining isolated in Jotunheim, cut-off from all planar affairs. Their defacto leader, the so-called God of Stone Giants is Skoraeus.

Sea giants

Sea giants, or vikjar, are isolatory and elusive creatures, rarely seen on Amanor and completely detached from planar politics -- similar to stone giants. They are the lords of Gandvikheim, the Plane of Water. They are medium in stature when compared to other giants and typically have huge beards and bellies. Their entire bodies are covered in corals, barnacles, seaweed, and talismans crafted from bones of aquatic creatures. Their god is Neptunus the Exile.

Storm giant

Storm giants, or vanjar, the tallest and perhaps mightiest of giants, are creatures attuned to the element of air and the guardians of Vanaheim. They are often benevolent by nature, if somewhat isolatory, and although they rebelled against the Empyreals in the Giant Rebellions together with other giants, they have since mended their ties with the gods and become their (distant) allies. Their leader is Vafthrudnir.
