Gahaeris Aodhain
Gahaeris Aodhain is the arl of Torilinn Downs and the feared head of House Aodhain. The Aodhains are a reclusive family with a dark and proud reputation, and this can be blamed almost solely on the deeds of their arl. Gahaeris Aodhain has lived for nearly a millenia, and has ever ruled his arldom of eastern Torilinn Downs with an iron fist.
The Duskbriner
Arl Gahaeris was once tasked by the Duc of Mercia to assist Adewald Bryce, the arl of East Mercia, in disarming a substantially large force of mercenaries operating in the province. The mercenaries had committed lawless acts and sowed seeds of rebellion, finding a sense of security in their large numbers. The Arl Adewald had attempted diplomacy before, but the mercenaries had simply moved from his arling to the lands of Torilinn Downs -- the domain of House aodhain. Arl Gahaeris rode to the task with a small force of warriors, joining the larger host of House Bryce in surrounding the mercenary camp. Arl Gahaeris requested from Arl Adewald the right to negotiate with the mercenaries. Once within the mercenary camp, Gahaeris saw the fruits of their most recent villainy: spoils taken from burned homesteads, stolen livestock roasting upon fires in wastefully luxurious numbers. Even worse, peasants from his lands had been taken as hostages, for the villanous mercenaries knew they needed something valuable to bargain with following their misdeeds. Gahaeris negotiated the surrender and disarmament of the mercenaries as Arl Adewald had ordered -- the villains would return their hostages immediately but be allowed to keep some of their spoils after their surrender. Giving them time until the dusk to disarm themselves, the arl departed. Satisfied, the villains began dismantling their encampment. Little did the vile mercenaries know that the arl -- a ruthless and vengeful man -- had deceived them. Once the camp was in disarray from hurried packing of supplies and armaments, the arl's spellcasters wrought a powerful magic that instantly turned a bright noon into a mist-shrouded twilight. The villains barely had time to realize what had occured as the arl's warriors charged from the foggy forests to lay waste to the disorganized camp, slaughtering the defenders to the last man and woman. Arl Adewald Bryce was greatly affronted. He complained to the queen that the quest had been given specifically to him and that Arl Gahaeris had worked outside his responsibility. The queen, however, had been displeased with Arl Bryce's tardiness in the matter and was greatly delighted by the grim justice served by House Aodhain.Your hostages I take with me, as a greatly appreaciated sign of your goodwill. You have until last light to disarm yourselves and pack up this warcamp. At dusk, my envoys will arrive to accept your surrender.
