Kastell-Briant (V)

A city and castle on the border between Duchy of Breizh and Anjou, this city is an important stronghold and settlement in the Duchy.

Demographics

Located on the Western border of the Duchy, the town and its surroundings have a more even gender ratio, with a slight female majority. While far from major Bleeds, the area's laylines, disrupted by the actions of the Southern Church are often erratic, leading to small pockets of Bleed appearing and disappearing in remote areas, leading to an increased in the Kontamnet population, but rarely to the level of Milliget.   There is a large Formorian presence in the hills nearby, and raids are frequent. Many Formorians live openly in the countryside with varying degrees of civility and formal relations with the town. The Faith dominates religion in town, but a small, but dedicated Druidic population has resurged.

Government

The ruling family, the Barons of Mea, controls the area from their seat in Kastell-Briant, drawing on a network of Barons, Knights and Lords to run smaller areas.   Officially sworn to the Dukes of Breizh, the region operates largely with autonomy.

Defences

The region is dominated by the Castle of Kastell-Briant, built high atop a rocky granite outcropping above the village.   A second, smaller fortress in the neighboring village of Béré is similarly situated and together the two sites protect the ancient Remusan road that runs through the region.   The town itself is protected by a wall, serviced by four gates. The Heart Gate (North) leads towards Roazhan, the Mikael Gate (Southeast) towards Angers, the Torch Gate (Northeast) towards Per-ys and the Sword Gate (South) towards Naoned. The walls are surrounded by a moat.

Industry & Trade

In addition to its agricultural prowess, Kastell-Briant is also a noteworthy center for metallurgy.   The Fair of Béré, one of the largest fairs in Breizh, takes place every year outside the city walls, drawing farmers and tradesmen from Upper Briezh and Anjev.

Infrastructure

The town is bisected by two noteworthy roads, the Road of the Heart and the Great Road. At the meeting of these two roads is a large and elaborate wooden meadhall, used for community events.

Assets

A largely agricultural region, Kastell-Briant maintains a small, hut respectable coffers, taking advantage of the rich soils and central location between 3 major cities.

Guilds and Factions

The Clisson Family serves as the Barons of Mea and Marquis of Kastell-Briant. The family has a long tradition of military service, earning distinction in the Broceliande Campaign.

History

For much of its history Kastelll-Briant and its surroundings were neglected by the Bediz, the land sparsely developed by small clans of subsistence farming. However around 700 SI, during the Reign of Jafrez Iz the House of Roazhon found itself surrounded by enemies and snake-tongued allies. The Duke built the castle to control the region between the Counties of Naoned, Roazhon and Anjev   Abbot Cotteux, a representative of the Southern Church, established an abbey in the region and set about dismantling the cromlechs and menhirs of the Fae, incorporating the materials in the Kalvar of the Faithful and disrupting the region's laylines to weaken the Sidhe Courts power in the region to great effect.
