Bugul-Noz

Basic Information

Anatomy

Very little is known of the physical appearance of the Night Shepherds, but most accounts describe the creatures to be approximately 1 meter in height with a lanky. roughly humanoid build and exceptionally long limbs.

Ecology and Habitats

Bugul-Noz reside alone in the dark forests and barren moorlands of the Armorican Peninsula, typically residing in the less populated Ar Goat. However, some have been observed in lesser numbers in coastal regions, such as the Bro Bagan. The creatures are not territorial, but take great pains to avoid visual contact with other creatures.   Bugul-Noz typically live in simply constructed field stone huts with dirt floors. These simple dwellings, rarely more complex than a single room, possess little ornamentation beyond the bare necessities.

Dietary Needs and Habits

The Bugul-Noz diet consists almost entirely of foraged foods, such as berries, grasses and fruits.

Additional Information

Social Structure

While not territorial or hostile, the Bugul-Noz is aggressively solitary, calling out loudly at night to warn others away lest they view their face. It is not known if this aversion extends to others of their species, but there is little evidence of any larger social networks or family structures.

Geographic Origin and Distribution

The Bugul-Noz are found almost exclusively on the remote Armorican Peninsula, but have been observed on rare occasions on both the Contentin Peninsula and along the northern Ar Mor of the Pleg-mor Gwaskogn. As they typically reside far from highly settled regions, the exact range of these creatures is unknown.

Average Intelligence

Given their anti-social behavior, it is difficult to measure the average intelligence of the Night Shepherds. However, records of their dwellings and limitied social interactions indicate at least a level of intelligence on par with the average Bediz.

Perception and Sensory Capabilities

Nocturnal creatures, the Bugul-Noz have little problem navigating in the dark of night, traveling by moonlight and starlight without issue. They have never been observed using flames or other sources of light.

Civilization and Culture

Common Etiquette Rules

The visage of the Bugul-Noz is thought to be monstrously hideous, capable of instilling a viewer with maddening fear, or in extreme cases, cardiac arrest and death. To avoid this, the Bugul-Noz lives a hermit's life of extreme solitude, coming out only at night and calling out loudly for others to keep away, less they view its face. Bugul-Noz are not particularly territorial, preparing flight and hiding to physical confrontation.

Common Dress Code

Bugul-noz are typically clad in all-white, but heavy clothing, including cloaks, bandanna and wide-brimmed hats obscure their features. Only a pair of glowing, disc-like eyes can be seen under these layers, reflecting the light of the moon or their lanterns.   The cloak of the Bugul-Noz renders those beneath it invisible to the Ankou

Common Taboos

Bugul-Noz will never approach any source of artificial or man-made light, and are driven away by the same.

Interspecies Relations and Assumptions

Bugul-Noz will return lost sheep to their flocks and shepherds under the cover of darkness, or guide lost travelers to safety from a distance. Bugul-Noz only venture near settlements at night, typically before some great calamity, calling out to all to remain in their homes until the danger has passed, but providing few details of the specific dangers.   It is thought that the Bugul-Noz might be related to the Boléguéans, the only species they regularly interact with on a social level.
