Personal history

The Ambitious Beaumoulins

Annaig is the Thirddaughter of Kenan and Josselyn Milinmad, a pair of wealthy cloth merchants in the Lethan city of Gwitreg. The Milinmads, as with many of Gwitreg's wealthy merchant class, were experiencing an unprecedented period of financial growth and political power, but they found their ascent limited by birth. Though they were wealthier than many of Gwitreg's noble class, long diminished by costly estates and generational mismanagement, they were prevented from obtaining the same prestige, power and clout.   Aiming to acquire the connections that would allow them to travel in noble circles, Josselyn began a concerted effort to link the Milinmad family with the noble houses of Gallia and Anjev. To begin, she began to refer to the family by the Gallian surname "Beaumoulin", while instructing the family to also adopt Gallian surnames. Thus, Annaig Milinmad became Antoinette Beaumoulin.   Next, Josselyn worked to place her daughters Josephine II, Julie, Antoinette and Severine within the noble houses as highly respected servants, such as as Ladies-in-Waiting. Antoinette proved ill-suited for these tasks, and her stay in 5 successive noble houses across Gallia and Anjev never lasted longer than 3 months.

Serving Lady Durtal

The last of Antoinette's ill-fated employers was Lady Josephine, Lady of Durtal, a minor sovereignty in Anjev. Lady Durtal had a reputation as a strict, stodgy and unpleasant woman who mistreated her servants. Antoinette. already with a bad reputation among the households of Anjev for her clumsiness and distracted enthusiasm, was miserable. Lady Durtal made it a point to berate the girl for even minor slip-ups, constantly saying her home was Antoinette's "last chance". Antoinette was miserable in Lady Durtal's household, verbally and emotionally abused for even things outside of her control, and looked down on for her peasant, Lethan roots. Lady Durtal refused to allow Antoinette to serve as a Lady-in-Waiting, claiming that her "Fairy-muddled blood and rural upbringing" made her ill-suited for the task. Antoinette was assigned to the kitchens, working as a scullery maid.   The one bright spot in Antoinette's time with the miserable old woman was the upcoming visit of the "Hero of Sluys, the gallant Knight, Enora de Chinon. Antoinette worked the hardest she ever had to earn a spot serving the table during the Lady of Amboise's visit. Lady Durtal was unimpressed and erupted in anger at a small mistep by the enthousiastic Antoinette. Enora, who had enjoyed the girl's company despite, or perhaps because of, her forwardness and forgotten decorum, quickly rose to Antoinette's defense, angered by Lady Durtal's treatment of her staff and the peasantry gathered outside for alms. When Josephine carried out her threat to fire and cast out the Lethan maid, Enora announced, before the stunned guests, that she would be taking on Antoinette as a member of her personal staff.

Serving The Golden Tower

Antoinette's admiration of her hero only grew with the personal encounter, and she dedicated herself wholly to serving as Enora's Lady-in-Waiting, despite still being utterly unsuited for the job. Eager to please, she followed Enora everywhere, even to inspect the garrison, a duty outside of her role. With each visit, and upon learning that Enora had no official squire, Antoinette took on more and more squirely duties on her own time, arguing that Enora's armour fell under the umbrella of "wardrobe" and Hastiludes were a "social function."   Antoinette began to identify herself as Enora's squire, which began to catch on, first as a joke, then with increased sincerity. When Enora herself accidentally used the term, Antoinette was so happy she dropped a tray of tea on a visiting dignitary in excitement.

Education

The daughter of a wealthy Gwitreg merchant family, Antoinette received a comprehensive education from the finest tutors money could buy, drawn from all over the Western Realms. Her father, a conservative supporter of the Staunchist movement, insisted that she only receive tutelage from Bediz scholars of the Gallian and Anjevin courts and spared no expense to ensure his preferences were met.   Despite her father's attempts to shelter her, Antoinette grew infatuated with Chasons de Gestes, stories of brave knights and heroes from Gallian history, taking it upon herself to strive to become a knight herself. An established part of the Gallian literary canon, her father could hardly refuse her access, an she quickly amassed quite a collection of adventurous tales, including many that diverted from the Staunchist narrative, extolling the heroics of non-human and Kontammant individuals, such as the Alliance of the Brekilien in addition to Bediz champions.

Employment

Antoinette's determination to become a knight continued unabashed, despite her father's best efforts to stifle it. Her behaviour soon became an embarrassment for him in front of his conservative allies, as Antoinette would run through the hallways challenging servants and guests to chivalrous combat. In an attempt to set her on the "correct path", he used his political connections to obtain her a role as a Lady-in-Waiting for a powerful Anjevin noblewoman, a position that was sure to assist in teaching her the "proper" behaviour and social etiquette expected of a woman in her position. Unfortunately for him, the noblewoman he chose was Enora de Chinon.   Despite her reputation as the "ideal" noblewoman, Enora quickly proved to be the opposite of the influence Antoinette's father had hoped, carrying a sword, commanding a Windship in combat and unapologetically taking part in Hastiludes and Tournaments. Under pressure from the socially conscious nobility and political pressure from the Staunchists, Antoinette maintains her role as a Enora's Lady-in-Waiting at court. But beyond the balls and castles of the nobility, she takes on responsibilities more suited to her desired role, serving as Enora's squire and bodyguard, receiving regular combat training and serving alongside her mistress aboard the Radiant Dawn, in the field and at hastilude, even taking part in squire's jousts herself.

Morality & Philosophy

Antoinette follows a strict code of chivalry, holding herself to the ideals of her beloved chansons de gestes.

Personality Characteristics

Motivation

Antoinette has vowed to become a knight errant and sally forth into the worlds righting all wrongs. She has dedicated herself to a personal and eccentric code of chivalry gleaned from the Chasons de Gestes of old. Antoinette has wholly dedicated herself to this pursuit, despite the disapproval of most of her family and the political reality of the military class. These setbacks have done little to dampen her enthusiasm for the project, however.

Savvies & Ineptitudes

Antoinette has proven a capable fighter, soldier and squire, assisting Enora and her crew in all manner of engagements and battles, ranging from jousts to pitched aerial battles. Despite her skill as a squire and soldier, her official role, that of a noblewoman's lady-in-waiting, leaves more to be desired, as Antoinette's reliance on an archaic and idealized view of the world and general clumsiness has led to difficulties in matching social expectations for one in her position.

Social

Contacts & Relations

Antoinette is a member of Enora's inner circle and is seen internally as a key member of the Radiant Dawn crew. As Lady-in-Waiting and Squire, Antoinette follows her mistress and friend as closely as a puppy, often present where the others are unable to be.

Family Ties

Antoinette's father, Kenan Beaumoulin, is a deeply conservative Staunchist hoping to ingratiate himself with Gallian and Anjevin nobility, hoping to elevate his family into their ranks. He disapproves of his daughter's knightly aspirations, but he is unwilling to cross Enora, one of the most powerful of the nobles he is attempting to ingratiate with.   More forceful is Antoinette's Mother, Josselyn Beaumoulin. A fantatical Staunchist, she once threatened to send her daughter to The Silent Sisters of Llydaw if she could not prove a "adequate" daughter by fulfilling her role as a "proper lady" in the noble households she is assigned too. She is willing to go further than Kenan in confronting Antoinette and Enora, and is the one largely responsible for Antoinette being forced to act "traditionally" while at Court, a major compromise. Josselyn is frequently trying to marry Antoinette off to Hubert, a cousin of House Frihep.   Antoinette's eldest sister, Josephine II, is in many ways, Josephine's ideal daughter. A highly regarded courtier, she is married to a minor baron in The Cloth Cities and is seen as a model of courtly etiquette, religious piety and conservative breeding. She regards Antoinette as an uncultured brat, and is quick to remind her sister of this fact. Antoinette views Josephine II as a rude, arrogant and stuffy bully.   Antoinette's second sister, Joela Millinmad (Julie Beaumoulin), is the black sheep of the family and Antoinette's idol, to the chagrin of the elder Beaumoulins. A headstrong rebel, she left the family in Gwitreg after a big fight, and the rumors of her rock-star lifestyle as a knight errant and adventurer are favourite subjects of Antoinette's. Its unclear what Joela is actually doing at any given time, as neither her letters nor Antoinette's recollections of them seem consistent. At present, she appears to be leading a peasant rebellion in Asturias.   Antoinette's youngest sister, age 6, is Severine Beaumoulin. Severine looks up to her big sister and the two get along very well.

Religious Views

Kenan, Josephine and Josephine II are pious members of The Faith and zealous Staunchists, shunning both Faerie and Druidic influence whenever possible. This has failed to pass on to some of the children, most notably Joela and to a lesser extent, Antoinette.   Antoinette, for her part, is less a professional rebel than Joela, but has adopted an idealized notion of chivalry separate from both the dogma of the Faith or the teachings of the Druids.   While personally indifferent to organized religion, Antoinette is publicly a devout member of the Southern Church while with her family or acting as their representative, making her required appearances in the elegant chapels of the nobility as expected of a person in her position, before sneaking off to patrol the ramparts or inspect the armory with much greater enthousiasm.

Social Aptitude

At first glance, Antoinette seems to fit the Gallian ideal of a Lady-in-Waiting perfectly, a picture of a quiet, demure and respectful woman serving her mistress without complaint or outburst. In reality, however, Antoinette is a creature of boundless energy and exuberant idealism, fancying herself a Knight Errant of old, dedicated to a selfless and constant ideal of chivalry, wholly disconnected from the nuanced and regulated politics of the military class. Antoinette's enthusiasm, unbridled imagination and dedication to her idealized vision of a knight often leads to her jumping into action without working out the whole situation or mistaking others as part of her partly fantastical world.   In times of crisis, however, she has proven a capable soldier and loyal friend to Enora and the crew of the Radiant Dawn, and is quite willing to stand up to her mother's allies when she feels they are in the wrong.

History

Antoinette is impressed and enarmoured with all of the Radiant Dawn Crew, including the hotshot pilot and adventurous scoundrel, Albert. Albert, a troublemaker at heart, is the one responsible for starting the trend of calling Antoinette "Enora's Squire", at first in mocking jest, then with increased sincerity. He actively encourages some of Antoinette's more fantastic flights of fancy, but keeps her out of real danger when he can.

Shared Acquaintances

Albert ran a smuggling operation during the Dock War, which Joela Millinmad took part in as a member of the rebelling faction. Albert did not learn the two were related until after Antoinette had long been part of the Radiant Dawn crew. The imagined blackmail that Antoinette doesn't actually have has led to a more respectful tone from the pilot to the squire.

Wealth & Financial state

As Enora's Lady-in-Waiting, and unofficially her squire, Antoinette has little in the way of personal wealth, but her connections and social position make up for this. Her family, the Beaumoulins, are one of the wealthiest families in Gwitreg, a city bursting at the seams with affluent bourgeois merchants and flowing coin. From their large townhouse on the opulent Rue d'En-Bas, the family exerts a great deal of direct control over the city's leatherworking guild and their influence is felt across Lower Letha, far beyond the city walls. Antoinette receives a generous stipend, albeit with tight restrictions on how she is to spend it.   Beyond the financial and social support of the Beaumoulins, Antoinette's position withing House de Chinon affords her social connections and a luxurious lifestyle usually reserved only for the most influential and wealthy houses of Anjevin nobility.
