Ambaxtoi

"Those who accompany", the Ambaxtoi are a type of Honour Guard found in martial and civil hierarchies throughout Northern Kornôgel.

Composition

Manpower

Traditionally, an Ambaxtoi is created with 3 individuals, and this is the most common understanding of the formation. However, depending on the social rank of the individual around whom the Ambaxtoi is formed, this can be scaled up, with units or vehicles filling the roles of individuals, with the importance placed on the multiples of three.

Equipment

A traditional ambaxtoi consists of a horse-drawn chariot, a spear, and a ranged weapon, typically a sling or a bow. This equipment has been updated routinely for regional or technological adaptation, but the general concepts remain the same.   Traditionally consisting of the clan leader and their most loyal supporters, the equipment of the unit is typically the highest quality available to the larger organization that the unit represents, befitting their status as elite warriors.

Weaponry

The Ambaxtoi formation traditionally consists of a spear and a ranged weapon like a sling or a bow, but modern technology and regional adaptation have allowed the core weaponry to be adapted to current standards, with javelins, polearms, lances and swords being widely adopted by the lancers, while longbows, crossbows, bolt-throwers and even Rods of Taranis are used by the ranged supporters.

Vehicles

A traditional ambaxtoi is built around a scythed chariot, capable of easily holding the charioteer and the lancer, while the support follows behind on horseback, ready to take on either role or replace the horse should any others fall.   The concept has been adapted further, with ships and windships adopting similar formations for naval combat, supported by aerial cavalry, such as Wyverns and ornithopters.

Structure

Central to the Ambaxtoi is the lancer, the primary fighter and de-facto leader of the formation. The lancer is traditionally of the highest rank among the parent organization, with the others serving as personal bodyguards, advisors and entourage.   Accompanying the lancer is the charioteer, serving as the driver and second in command, directly supporting the lancer. The support follows behind, providing ranged and logisitical support, but ready to relieve one of the other roles in the event of injury or fatigue.   This system allows specialized focus from the lancer and the charioteer, while the support exists to provide a ready source of relief, which can be cycled to prolong an engagement.

Tactics

This formation forms the core of a traditional clan fighting structure, which continues into modern usage. The core usage of the formation is a maneuver called the Trimarcisia, A rider would begin a fight, with a standby horse prepared by the second member, should the first tire or fall, at which point the fresh horse would be provided. A second rider would operate as a reserve and the three would cycle through combat as needed.   As warfare modernized, this system of support and reserves has continued, with the division of three roles, used outside of cavlary formations as well: the primary, typically the leader of the unit, a support member and a reserve member. As an Ambaxtoi grows in size, the roles grow more complex and expand, but the core concept remains the same.

History

The Ambaxtoi was first utilized by the Sidhe of the Fortunate Isles, sweeping across Northern Kornôgel with its efficient and effective use. It was heavily adopted in the Duchy of Letha, becoming the favoured form of unit division in the region.

Historical loyalties

Typically, an Ambaxtoi was formed by the most loyal and direct supporters of a clan chief, later a noble, a mixture of an martial honor guard and a social entourage, offering both combat support and advice and support in more civil matters.
