MaryLou Crandall (a.k.a. Jones (surname via first marriage), King (surname at birth))

MaryLou Crandall is Nicola Crandall's mother. After Nicola's father left, MaryLou was a single mother herself. When Nicola was nine, MaryLou got married again, this time to Jacob Crandall. That relationship ended with Nicola's step-dad dying while Nicola was away at college. MaryLou took his death badly, losing much of her identity along with her husband. When Nicola came back home, pregnant, MaryLou channelled herself into being a grandmother. MaryLou often takes her grandchildren for a week or more at a time. She insists that the arrangement is only temporary as she "doesn't want to raise more kids." However, she is willing to let visits go on for weeks or even months when Nicola disappears. After the events of Too Wyrd, MaryLou and Nicola fought over Nicola's new role as quest hero. Much of the problem was that Nicola tried to explain it without mentioning Gods or Magic/Psychic Abilities. This made it sound like Nicola had run off and gotten involved in a gang fight. MaryLou could not let this go and let it influence her choice to use the Eighth Runespell against her daughter.

MaryLou works a series of white-collar jobs, primarily in office management, payroll, and inventory management. She also recieves a small pension through each of her husbands.

Intellectual Characteristics

MaryLou has several extreme beliefs. Primarily, she is Christian and firmly believes she is saving her daughter and granddaughters when she constantly harrasses Nicola over attending church, etc. She also follows the beliefs of meritocracy - people get what they deserve and work for. Luck or circumstance are not significant. If you succeed, it is by your own hard work, and if anything happens to you, it is a reflection on your character, good and bad. MaryLou does not agree with mental health care. She feels that psychiatrists are only for crazy people, and that going to therapy is a sign of weakness. To her, there is no reason a person can't just get through things. She often criticizes Nicola for getting therapy and for taking Maria and Ella to a therapist when situations warrent it.
