Warlord Zynn

Written by Raveneye

Baron Zynn Garradeoso (a.k.a. Warlord Zynn)

The Beginning

On the 23rd day of Comasu, during 1380, an orange sky filled with smoke and debris. There is the ringing of steel clashing on the battlefield as soldiers and barbarians meet. Tearing through the ground is vibrant bursts of magical energy. The terrain gives way from the blast, upending the warriors in that area. Calvary enters the fray stampeding to a grove of thick and tall barbarians. These fierce multi-racial warriors stand ready for the coming assault. The riders charge through, thrusting their spears at the barbarians. The riders skewered several of the savages like boars. A capable female warrior had parried the spear tip with her dual-edge battleax and countered with an overhead slash with her second battleax. The force of the blow knocks the rider off of the horse. The impact of the ground forces the rider's breath to escape. The rider looks up to see a pregnant female barbarian slashing her dual battleax down.   The woman barbarian cleans her blood-stained axes and looks around for her surviving comrades with a concerned look. A thick orc greets her and butts his forehead against her forehead. A few other comrades survived the cavalry charge coalescing around the couple. The dust from the cavalry slowly fades, and the silhouette of foot soldiers makes their way to the combatants. A couple of bolts pierce into the sweaty flesh of the barbarian maiden. She buckles in discomfort but not from the wounds that were just received. But the pain is coming from her pregnancy. She gives a soft gaze to the male orc comforting her but turns cold quickly. Enemy soldiers are rapidly approaching their position. The surviving group of barbarians engages the soldiers. They dispatched the first wave of footmen, but a painful contraction distracts the woman. She suffers a hemorrhaging wound in her arm that is bleeding profusely. She recklessly attacked the soldier that gave him an opening before falling to her blades. She scans her wound and then tries to get the timing of the contractions.   Finally, in despair, she pulls out a dagger from her waistline. She begins to slice open her bulging belly. The others see her actions and form a loose wall around her. The thick orc stands boldly in front of her as a shield. Descending on the small group of barbarians is a battalion of spearmen, footsoldiers, and crossbowmen. Several of the men fall as they give their lives protecting the woman that is cutting out. The sound of a wailing baby cuts through the noise of battle. The protective orc looks back to see the woman cradling a newborn. She is bloody and pale. She stretches the newborn half-orc to the protective orc, and he clutches the newborn with his massive hands. He looks at her one last time and escapes the battlefield with the baby. The woman wipes a single tear off her cheek. She wipes the sweat off of her brow and picks up her two battleaxes with what remains of her strength. She angrily stares at the troops that are rapidly approaching.   The bards loyal to Warlord Zynn tell the story of his mother’s sacrifice in the heat of warfare on the day of his birth. They sing of his childbirth at the Battle of Montaelrayo to the tribe of Garraoso. Lord Hammond’s army and their magical prowess decimated the barbarian tribes. Only one warrior returned from the battle of clan Garraoso, and he came back with a newborn in his arms. The survivor’s name is Qog. He is the father of Warlord Zynn.

The Early Years

The location of the Garraoso tribe is in the northern reaches of Iriamar. Near the base of the Picojoya mountains. Qog Garraoso taught his son Zynn the ways of the warrior. He trained him on how to use various weapons at a young age. Zynn mastered multiple martial weapons, but he excelled at the way of the dual-wielding battleax. The same fighting style as his mother. He even coached him on the methods of being silent. Oswe Garraoso, his aunt on his mother’s side, taught him the way of his people. That totem’s spirit showed him the dire bear’s means and how to channel that totem’s energy in combat. During those early years, she showed him how to handle various animals. She peppered him with many stories about his mother and her brave deeds.   Around the age of thirteen, allies arrived to speak with the chieftain. These allies were from L’Allegro. L’Allegro is a hobgoblin stronghold. Once that meeting has ended, the chieftain picks several young warriors to leave with them. Qog and Oswe said their farewell to Zynn.   Zynn and the other recruits travel to L’Allegro. This stronghold is built and run by hobgoblins, but many other demi-humans live here. The architecture is very militant and minimalistic in design. For example, creating the walls and towers was about function, not beauty.   A stoic instructor patiently waited for the recruits to make formation. Movelened a stoic hobgoblin that would train the various recruits in the art of warfare. Zynn excels at the training. The early teachings of his father and aunt had him become the top of his class. With the sheer control of rage and his fighting style, none in his class could compete. He brutally beat the other recruits, but none seem to hate him for it. He had a charismatic way with them. During his first wargame, they put him up against more experienced men. He showed remarkable leadership. He led the young members of his tribe to a narrow victory.   The leaders of L’Allegro saw a lot of potential in the young half-orc. So they began teaching him goblinoid and the teachings of Maglubiyet. During this part of his life, he met one of his future generals, Sano Benedizione. Sano was a young acolyte of Maglubiyet and in training to become a warrior cleric for Fiery-Eyes. First, however, the deity spoke to Zynn, whose language was with his axes.

The Emergence of L’Allegro

L’Allegro had started a military campaign against several warlords and the would-be king’s in the northern territory of Iriamar. There were three primary generals of the army: Movelened, Jierskaad, and Lachesis. Each of the three generals had their secret objective to achieve. Each of the three generals investigated all the recruits ready for war. Movelened knew the recruits that he wanted in his army. He took Zynn and Sano with the remaining barbaric recruits. They would make up a new unit in his army.   Movelened had three known objectives of conquest. The first was a city-state known as the Sedaarbol. Levi Al’dorn was the governor. Sedaarbol was a large city built on a hill with walls. The second was Saritobi Rami and the land of Pradera, a grassland territory. Lord Hammond was Movelened's third target. The same man who fought back the barbarian horde when Zynn was born.   Zynn performed brilliantly in the first two campaigns. During the battle of Sedaarbol, a cavalry unit of hippogriffs descended upon Zynn and his company. The riders grappled with Zynn and several others from his team. They lifted him into the air and attempted to drop him from the sky. Zynn's enraged strength gripped tightly to the hippogriff’s legs. He used his massive power to change the beast’s trajectory to fly over the city’s first wall. Zynn let go and landed on the ramparts of the wall. After dispatching a few guards, he opened the city’s gate to let his army into the city’s first half. That led to the fall of Sedaarbol. The campaign against the riders of Pradera. Zynn displayed his fierce double battleax attacks against his enemy. He took multiple targets down with his martial skills. He managed to defeat a huge lizard that walks on two feet and has various sword-like teeth in its mouth. Zynn smites the beast with a single blow.   Zynn achieved many accomplishments during the first two campaigns. Movelened promoted him to lead a military unit within his army, and that unit was called Patan Pandilla. The Battle of Titiriero would be his first challenge as a leader. General Movelened led the army division of L’Allegro against the army of Lord Eldric Hammond. Zynn volunteered his unit to flank Lord Hammond’s army’s magical prowess during the battle planning. General Movelened agreed to this idea.   At the battle of Titiriero, Zynn and his barbaric platoon were dumbfounding the mages. The wizard spells were not affecting or doing the usual damage to these soldiers. Lord Hammond sent his guards towards the brutal approach. Zynn had ordered the remainder of his unit to keep the non-magical soldiers at bay. Lord Hammond was known to sling spells and could dance with a blade. The battle between them was a stunning display of martial and magical prowess. They say that Zynn sliced off the jaw of Hammond before he could whisper a magical incantation. After the fall of Hammond, the rest of the army crumbled away. General Movelened won that day and eventually won the campaign for L’Allegro.

The Rise of Zynn

Patan Pandilla was known as the mage bane after the conflict of Titiriero. The tactics they implored and the abilities they used countered magical users. They were also skilled enough in hand-to-hand combat to hold their own against regular soldiers. Zynn and his unit embody the preaching of Maglubiyet. Zynn did not care if other’s worshipped a different deity. All he asks for is to follow the mandate of war and order. Thus, he became a blood knight of the god of war and order. Patan Pandilla was never afraid to be in the heart of the battle. The leadership of L’Allegro knew this.   L’Allegro started grooming Zynn to become a new general in their army. They had him and his unit return to begin to groom recruits. They also had his unit join the campaigns of General Jierskaad and General Lachesis. Zynn and his flock rose through the ranks of L’Allegro. During this time, his crew started to grow. He adds various magi, Othoken Drekiglar, and gnomish artificers, Dala Tinkerthrottle. He also starts imploring multiple brutal tactics during campaigns in Iriamar. Zynn and his council designed the tactics to hit the heartstrings of the current leader. If the leader didn’t react to those methods, he would try to get the people to turn against the ruler. These more sinister methods were taught to him by his future spymaster, Madeline Amberwuf.

The Battle of Jardin Detormenta

After years of campaigns and war, the leadership of L’Allegro had decided to give a present to Zynn. They intend to award him the gift of a governess. He has to lead his force and allies into the land known as Tierradelos. The surrounding landscape made the campaign a long one. The lord of the land, Damcis Continuar, used that to his advantage. Damcis had studied the tactics that Zynn had used in the past. He found countermeasures for the majority of them. Madeline suggested an assassination attempt on Lord Damcis or his wife. Zynn ordered Madeline to sneak into his stronghold in Merperro to assassinate him. She snuck into the compound during a full moon. She brutally murdered Damcis’s wife. Ripping her up to shreds, but she wasn’t able to kill Damcis. Damcis broke, seeing his poor wife dead in their bed. Damcis gathered his army in Jardin Detormenta. Jardin Detormenta is a rocky plain with tall grass. The military of Damcis consisted of several mages and clerics. In addition, he had squadrons of aarakocra archers and a well-trained cavalry unit. On the other hand, Zynn utilized gnomish war engines and zeppelins to accompany his standing army. The two armies clashed for days. The ground sizzled with blood and magical energy. Bodies and flying vehicles fell from the sky.   Damcis and his army met Zynn and his men on Jardin Detormenta. The battle was brutal. Zynn and Damcis managed to meet in the chaos. The two holy warriors clashed their respective weapons against each other. Sparks of divine energy crackled through the air. It was the barbarian’s ferocity that won the encounter for Zynn.   Once Damcis fell in the field, the remnants of his army scattered. The stronghold of Merperro yields to Zynn. Many of the mid to large towns of the area did the same. The towns that did not pay him allegiance. He outsourced the fall of those towns or until they paid up. He would make his armies appear heroic once they took the knee. The mercenaries erased the villages that did not yield.
