Kingdom of Ferrum
Resilient as Steel
Ferrum stands as immovable as the mountain it calls home. Its way of life remains unchanging despite the constant change in the world around it. Human through and through, outsiders don't last very long in the cities throughout Ferrum, often finding the people cold and distrusting. Even trade with Redmont remains limited, as the citizens of the north find their southern cousins removed and distant.
Expert blacksmiths and craftsmen, Ferrins treasure their skills and are sought after worldwide for their skill. However, only the Middoryn Dwarves are allowed to travel to the capital to learn the unique methods of metalworking that Ferrum utilizes. Ferrum comprises six main cities and numerous farming communities. A traditional monarchy rules the kingdom, with local barons running the cities and ensuring taxes are collected from the peasantry.
The people of Ferrum sport dark hair and warm olive skin. Their average height is often lower than their northern neighbors, and they are notably resilient due to the harsh life in the fields and mines. The maul is the go-to weapon of the knights of the land and serves as the national sigil on the flag.
History
The founding of Ferrum is debated among historians. Some suggest that the human groups originated from a nomadic tribe. Priscan historians hold that Mt. Deselatus was where Kraxin brought humans from a land where animals spoke Common and the Great Lion ruled supreme. Redmont tradition teaches that Ferrum and Redmont were once a united kingdom, until a secret discovered during the Reign of Ice divided them. Ferrum history speaks of a time of great greed from Redmont, when the kings and queens of old cared for nothing but gold and power. Ferrum stood against this greed and was invaded as recompense for its desire for justice. Every interaction between the common folk of Ferrum and the citizens of Redmont carries an underlying uncertainty regarding the other’s purpose.
During the ancient times before the founding of Aelerzodye, wars between the people raged frequently. Following the founding of Aelerzodye and alliances between the Elves and Redmont, these conflicts began to decline, occurring only when a great offense was committed between the two kingdoms. The War of Vengeance, fought from 890–902 AZ, resulted in the utter destruction of the city of Naporia and the desolation of Woodwick in southern Redmont. In retaliation, the armies of Redmont destroyed much of the Ferrum Wall and ransacked Silar. Peace was brokered by Tal'vanis Varin of Aelerzodye in the Treaty of Prisca in 902. The terms stated that the Ferrum Wall could only be repaired in its current portion, and Naporia would not be rebuilt. These were seen as gestures of trust by both parties involved.
Structure
- King - Rules Ferrum with guidance from the Council of Cities. Hereditary role, with significant symbolism involved.
- Council of Cities - Guides the day to day operations of the Kingdom. Each city operates independently, leading to a greater diversity in governance styles than a more King centric country like Redmont.
- City Governor - Leader of one Ferrum's major cities, a City Governor rules each city and the surrounding countryside. Works on the Council of Cities.
