Way-Guard

With the calamity at the end of the Last War, governments and the rule of law were all but destroyed, towns and cities looked to their own security and the safety of their own citizens but without law on the roads, trade had all but stopped for months. Venturing out of the town-steads meant leaving the idea of safety and risking attack by bandits, goblins or worse on the roads.    An organisation popped up, gathering those who could (fewer every year as Calamity Sickness takes ahold more and more) and setting up patrols between settlements and organising for people to help clear out when those who would do harm to the innocent would take root.

Career

Qualifications

Anyone who can patrol and fight with a weapon is welcomed to the ranks of the Way-Guards but those with experience as a guard or watchmen are most welcomed. A large proportion of the ranks are ex-soldier from the Last War.

Career Progression

A way-guard patrol is usually led by a Watch Sergeant and each hub from where patrols are sent is led by a Watch Captain.

Payment & Reimbursement

Pay is ten silver a week and room and board are included, which makes it a well paid line of work to be in.

Other Benefits

Many cheer the arrival of a way-guard patrol, and they can be well fed and looked after where ever appear. Others think them naive and see struggling against the inevitable as foolish.

Operations

Tools

Most Way-Guards are dressed in leather armour and a steel helm with a distinctive red plume. They are typically armed with spears and a shield with a short sword at their waists. Watch Sergeants will have a larger plume and will often have an enchanted sword. a Watch-Captain's plume is grander still and they will also have a short red cape.

Provided Services

  • Regular patrols of common routes between settlements
  • Guard duty in smaller towns that lack their own Watch
  • Sorties to deal with specific threats to the peace
  • Ordering bounties or hiring people to deal with bigger threats

Dangers & Hazards

Danger is constant, due to their relative rarity, they are often outnumbers by bandit groups and its worth the risk for bandits to operate in a lot of places. Fighting against other incursions and threats only makes the job riskier.
