Saint Kristoff

Saint Kristoff

Saint Kristoff is a powerful wizard and the closest thing the Land of Eternal Winter has to a ruler. Formerly a divine Saint, he has given up that power as he did not really want to be worshiped anymore.

Personal history

Saint Kristoff was born a mortal man in Keponarth, a land with no gods, and rose up to be a powerful wizard. After a disagreement with one of the Wizard-Kings, he was banished from the cities and forced to live the life of a hermit. He would go from town to town, helping the people to build things, as he was a powerful carpenter and craftsman of magical items, and tried to make their lives better. He acquired many followers of all races, but particularly among the druids, as they had also been shunned by the Wizard-Kings. During this time, he discovered The Secret, and empowered himself with the prayers of his followers, drawing further ire from the Wizard-Kings. This lead to a deadly battle, where the combined might of their power was enough to destroy most of Saint Kristoff's followers. Reduced to his eight powerful druids and his favored martial champion, a dwarf named Yukon, he opened a portal and fled to the Land of Eternal Winter. Granting his last followers immunity from the cold, they sent about building a new home, a giant tower for him to view the whole realm from. They also enacted powerful wards and seals, to keep those of evil from being able to enter the realm. Sometime after this, Saint Kristoff slayed a powerful white dragon that had taken up residence in the realm before his arrival, and also sealed away a powerful demon named Krampus.   For many centuries, there was peace. Saint Kristoff helped to build the northern lands, and with no evil to fight, constructed a mountain with magically replenishing veins of ore and gemstones for his friend Yukon to mine. He left the native peoples of the south alone, having killed the White Dragon that they worshiped, and saw no need for further bloodshed. This all changed with the arrival of the Snow Elves. Refugees from another world of snow and ice, they sought to rebuild their society after their world was consumed by The Black King. He would help them carve out a new life here, helping to build the city of Calatheui around his tower and they in turn gifted him with their worlds sun, which they had saved with great sacrifice from the Black King. This was fortunate as the Land up until then had always been in a perpetual state of twilight. He raised the sun into the sky and the world began to flourish.   However, the elves began to worship Kristoff as a god, and he did not want that life anymore, preferring to be an example of what a goodly person should be, as opposed to the source of power for it. Seeking to just be a man again, albeit a powerful wizardly one, he gave a divine blessing to the elves, giving them endless life, a favor he also extended to Yukon and the Druids. He then divided his power up among the Druids, giving them the ability to bring back the dead and how to seal away evil and maintain the wards. The Druids then took to defending the realm from evil, normally appearing as stags in the forest. Yukon continued to be a miner, also building a boat and taking people across the mighty river when needed. Kristoff was restless however, and took to traveling the planes, and inspired a number of legends, many of which concerned a man in red leaving gifts during the winter. He always returned to the Land of Eternal Winter however. It was during these travels that he drew the attention of Alexis Ironston, having stopped for a drink at Sarah's Place, an interplanar bar. She recruited him into the Order of the Blue Magi, which sought to promote goodness in the realms through responsible use of magic against the tides of evil.   The Lakewood Crew Incident   For years, the human natives of the Land of Eternal Winter were not a problem to Kristoff. They hated him and the northern peoples, as he had slayed their creator deity, an ancient white dragon, years ago, and sealed him away from the world. They would occasionally try to attack the north, but were always beat back by the Stags, Yukon, or the other defenses he had created for such problems. However, when another group of refugees, this time other humans, landed on the southern area of the island and settled, this proved to be problematic. Seeking them out after they had built their settlement, Kristoff parted the twilight in the southern realm around them so as to allow them to farm like in their homeland, which further annoyed and angered the natives. The natives then decided to go to war with the human settlers, using their dead as a means to bolster their own power, and eventually they killed all the great stags, breaking the seals that kept Krampus at bay. Krampus then proceeded to kill Kristoff, surprising him as he was finishing an order of magical items for Lady Alexis. Thankfully, these turned out to be for a group of "Heroes" that Alexis had summoned to defeat Krampus later on and retrieve the shard of the ancient sword Dragon's Bane that Kristoff had taken from the dragon's horde years earlier. After the heroes brought Kristoff back to life, he used a spell of wish to bring back all of Krampus's victims and gave them the shard, then proceeded to open a portal for them to visit Alexis's tower and find their way home.
